Indiana Hospital Association

Indiana Hospital Association IHA works to continuously improve health care in the state of Indiana.

The Indiana Hospital Association was founded in 1921 by hospital leaders who wanted to improve the quality of care in Indiana by sharing best practices. IHA serves more than 170 Hoosier hospitals--from rural community hospitals to regional and statewide health systems. IHA's primary functions include advocacy, regulatory, data reporting and analysis, professional development, patient safety and quality, and communications.

New reporting highlights how insurance practices are impacting rural hospitals—and patients.

In Greene County, where there are just 2.9 doctors per 10,000 people, access to care is already limited. Insurance payment issues are making it worse.

“Some of the underpayment has actually been passed on to the patients to their deductibles,” said Greene County General Hospital, CEO Brenda Reetz. “They’re unknowingly being charged more… not by us, but by their own insurance company that they pay money to be a part of.”

A new NBC News report highlights a growing national concern: when insurance denials stand in the way of medically necessary care.

The story follows Cambrie, a teen with severe epilepsy whose recommended treatment was delayed after an insurance denial — despite ongoing, daily seizures.

This issue has direct connections to Indiana. Cambrie’s mother, Brandi, is a nurse by background helping to improve health care across Indiana — while navigating barriers to care for her own child.

At IHA, we see how often delays and denials impact patient care. That’s why we launched Access Denied — to hold health insurers accountable.

In our series “The Cost of Denial,” NBC News’ Maggie Vespa reports on a 13-year-old Illinois girl who suffers from as many as four seizures a day. Insurance denied coverage for the surgery her doctor said could help, but then reversed its decision days after we asked about the case.

A powerful new NBC Nightly News story highlights what far too many families are facing across the country — delays and denials for medically necessary care.

Cambrie, a teen living with severe epilepsy, endured daily seizures while her family fought for access to a treatment her doctors said could help — only to be denied by insurance.

This national issue hits close to home. Cambrie’s mom, Brandi, is a nurse helping to improve health care in Indiana, all while fighting for care for her own daughter.

Stories like Cambrie’s are why IHA launched Access Denied — to shine a light on how insurance barriers can delay or block care patients need.

Cambrie’s doctors recommended a treatment commonly used for children with epilepsy. Her surgery was scheduled.

Then, just days before, it was denied by her insurer—followed by multiple denied appeals.

For seven months, she continued to have daily seizures while her family ran out of options.

The denial was only reversed after her story drew national media attention—even though no new medical information was presented.

This is the reality behind Access Denied—when harmful insurer practices delay care patients need.
