Like a Lion Providing academic, emotional and spiritual support to youth on the east side of Indianapolis Our program runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6:30.

Like a Lion works with kids grades k-7th in our after school program and our summer camp. We focus on providing the children with a loving environment where they can grow closer to Jesus and grow as active members of their community. We are currently running our after school program where the kids come to get school help, bible studies, participate in clubs, and have free time. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Maddy Schlichter at 317-363-0794 or [email protected].

Sometimes STEM projects are a slam dunk and other times they flop a bit. These playdough houses were a little challenging for our little lions, but they made the best of it and created some creative things with their playdough. The best thing about STEM is that it gives the kids the chance to learn through creativity, even if it looks a little different than we originally planned.

Shout out to our behavior specialist Miss Q! This summer she has a special role of keeping our students on track, supporting them during challenging moments and keeping things fun! She has a special gift of being able to connect with and encourage our students. She can stop a difficult moment in its tracks before it escalates and she has made each student feel special and known this summer. We are SO thankful for Miss Q and all she has brought to our camp this year!

Our older students participated in a financial literacy club this year! We took a hands-on approach with some practical activities where they created a meal plan, built out their grocery list, and then placed a mock Kroger pickup order. Through the process, they learned how to navigate grocery shopping, discovered that being on a budget sometimes means choosing store brands over name brands, and hopefully gained a little appreciation for their parents and all that goes into feeding their family each week 🧡

While our little kids spend worship time doing fun dance moves, our older students take a different approach. They listen to worship songs and watercolor paint while they meditate on the lyrics. Afterwards, they discuss as a group what the song might reveal about God and the impact of worship on our lives. Though worship may look different for each age group, the heart behind it remains the same: to draw us closer to God and spend time praising the one who loves us most!

Thursdays are for field trips! Today we headed to for a fun filled day. Our kids had a blast exploring all the exhibits, learning new things, and hanging out in the sports zone! The Children's Museum is the perfect mix of education and fun, making it an amazing field trip. Definitely a favorite!

We love STEM! Twice a week, our students work through fun STEM activities that get their brains moving. They focus on problem-solving and teamwork while tackling some fun projects. Last week, they were challenged to stack their Pringles into a full circle. Check out these towers they came up with!

Our favorite crew is back for another summer! These three have been part of the Like a Lion family for the past decade, and they’re back for their 3rd year as summer staff. Watching them grow up as participants in our program, transition into volunteering, and now serve on staff has been one of the greatest joys. We love these three and feel so lucky to have them!

Art is a part of our every day here at LAL! We love giving kids the chance to express their creativity, try new things, and get a little messy along the way. There is something special about watching our kids dive into a project and make it their own. Check out some art projects we did last week!

Reading is always one of our favorite parts of summer, and this year we are celebrating our 8th year partnering with The Indy Learning Team (TILT)! TILT has a wonderful program that identifies each child's specific literacy gaps and provides targeted intervention to address them. Students are placed into small groups and receive daily literacy lessons tailored to their needs.

We truly love our partnership with TILT and have seen so much growth in our students each summer. Here's a video of one of our all-star teachers, Miss Nuri, who's going over some basics with our youngest lions!
