For years, I thought I had to forgive my mother's toxic parenting. Then I had a daughter. I learned that breaking generational trauma isn't about forgiveness; it's about having the courage to protect your child, even if it means standing up to your own family. This was the fight for my daughter's right to be herself.

It started with "boyish" toys and ended with a painful choice. This is my story of setting boundaries with a toxic mother to stop the cycle of trauma and protect my daughter's freedom.

I pressed the pen against the permission slip for the s*x education class and wrote her name, my hand moving with the practiced confidence of someone who had memorized every curve and illegible scrawl.
