National politics are tilting the race for Indiana secretary of state this fall. That's one takeaway from a new nonpartisan survey conducted by a polling firm often hired by Republican clients. Says Free Press Indiana, the nonprofit news outlet that sponsored the poll, "54% of Hoosiers do not approve of the president’s job performance, marking a sharp turn for voters in deep-red Indiana, where Trump won the state by nearly 20 percentage points in 2024." Another surprise in the poll is what concerns* Hoosier voters most.

Free Press Indiana Poll also shows how much name recognition candidates have.

Voting shouldn’t require figuring everything out on your own.

Across Indiana, our partners are creating resources to help Hoosiers understand when, where and how to vote — and what to do if they run into a problem.

As early voting begins October 6, put these resources to work:

🗳️ Check polling locations and wait times with Vote IN Time.

📍 Find county-specific voting information from ReCenter Indiana, including resources for Marion, Hamilton and Boone counties.

👥 Watch and share ReCenter’s “Hey, Can I Vote With You?” videos — then invite a young voter in your life to vote with you.

☎️ Save 866-OUR-VOTE for nonpartisan help with voting questions or problems at the polls.

📚 Explore voter guides from organizations and newsrooms across Indiana to learn more about what will appear on your ballot.

And don’t keep these resources to yourself. Send one to a friend. Drop one in the family group chat. Share them with a neighbor or coworker.

Helping someone get the information they need to participate is civic engagement, too. Early voting begins October 6. Election Day is November 3.

What riles you up in Indiana politics? Nepotism and no-bid contracts? Straight-ticket voting? The fact that only lawmakers, not ordinary citizens, can place issues on the ballot? On all those matters, there's disagreement among the four candidates* for secretary of state. But overall, this fall, where can you learn who's running for what? News outlets have created online guides -- because, "Voting can be confusing, intimidating and overwhelming."

Voting in Indiana is not an easy process. Doing your civic duty requires optimism and nimbleness.

Indiana's secretary of state is in charge of keeping elections fair, so is it fair for that official to take sides in those elections? Greg Ballard says no. Ballard, formerly a Republican, is running for secretary of state this fall under the banner of the new Lincoln Party. But the Democratic candidate, Beau Bayh, says no citizen should have to give up the right to support a candidate. However, Bayh pledges he would not award any official contracts to his campaign donors. That's a swipe at the current GOP secretary of state, Diego Morales, who lost his party's nomination for re-election. The Republican on the ballot this fall is Max Engling. His campaign says Engling commits not to use the office for campaign functions "because that is already the law in Indiana.” Libertarian candidate Laurie Schillings says a stronger pledge would be to recuse oneself from “any election matter involving a candidate I’ve endorsed or raised money for.”
