GOOD NEWS FRIDAY: Late last month, more than 100 residents gathered in Gary to discuss the future of one of Northwest Indiana’s most important industries: steel. It's just the beginning of an important conversation about jobs and public health in the region.

At a town hall, the community raised questions about pollution and the future of Gary Works.

"Propping up coal billionaires with taxpayer money is one more way for the Trump administration to put polluters first and put the rest of us at risk."

The money will fund new and existing coal plants, as well as an export terminal in Oakland, California.

Who stood up for conservation in the 2026 Indiana General Assembly?

We believe that elected officials who commit to a clean, affordable future for all Hoosiers deserve recognition. Our annual Legislative Conservation Champions series highlights state lawmakers who were unwavering in their support for clean energy and water and air quality.

This week, we honor Sen. Shelli Yoder for their efforts in her forward-thinking conservation leadership authoring SB 67 to launch dedicated state environmental and conservation studies. Follow along all summer as we continue to spotlight champions!

We had the absolute best time connecting with fellow Hoosiers at EarthDay Indiana’s EarthFest this past weekend!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the ICV table at Garfield Park to say hi, grab some resources, and share your ideas. Let’s keep this momentum going—because taking care of our communities and our planet is a team effort!

"Households and businesses will bear the financial brunt of propping up coal plants, which are more expensive to operate than newer gas plants and renewable energy paired with batteries."

The DOE says the Schahfer plant is key for reliability, but repairs mean it’ll be offline for much of 2026. The grid is set to be just fine without it…

"The public needs to know how much money the state is losing, but also the lawmakers need to access this information to be able to make good fiscal decisions about the state budget."

New records show some Indiana data centers have reported hundreds of millions in state sales and use tax exemptions.

May is American Wetlands Month!

Since 1991, the EPA and partners have used this month to highlight the critical importance of wetlands to our nation's ecological, economic and social health.

Wetlands are often called the "kidneys" of a watershed because they filter out excess nutrients, toxic substances and sediment, drastically improving water quality. They also function as effective and economical green infrastructure, managing water supply and reducing flooding risks.

Celebrate this month by learning more about these essential ecosystems in Indiana using our resource page: https://indianacv.org/wetlands/

GOOD NEWS FRIDAY: Nothing beats learning by doing. Following up on our first educational session, ICV's Hoosier Stewards recently joined with the Indiana Composting Council and Soul Food Project for a hands-on composting workshop.

Instead of just talking about the benefits of reducing waste, attendees got to dive into a practical demonstration. We covered lots of topics and ensured everyone walked away with the real-world tools they need to stick with their composting goals.

A big thank you to our partner organizations for making this collaboration possible. Stay tuned for our next Hoosier Stewards event or learn more about the program here ➡️ https://indianacv.org/welcome-to-hoosier-stewards-indianas-community-conservation-movement/

Protecting family farms means giving farmers the freedom to use their land to secure their financial future.

That’s why more than 300 local residents supported Knox County Commissioners as they recently approved the county's utility-scale solar ordinance. This decision protects property rights and provides a vital financial lifeline.

Fixed solar lease income helps farming families hang onto their land during tough crop years or market downturns, shielding agricultural spaces from permanent commercial development.

Thank you to the Commissioners for passing an ordinance that respects landowners, boosts the local economy and ensures our grid stays strong and resilient. Southwest Indiana is open for innovation!
