The first speaker at the second day of our National Convention was Dr. Reverend Everett Kelley, the National President of the American Federation of Government Employees. He reminded us that, “the universal service obligation is not a line item, it is a promise. It is the promise that a letter delivered to a farmhouse in Alabama will cost the same as a letter delivered to a high rise in Los Angeles.”

We will keep that promise as long as the US Mail remains not for sale!

In 2025, as the White House proposed privatizing the USPS, Iowa farmer, Chris Petersen, was alarmed. Living 20 miles from town, the Postal Service is a vital connection for him. “I’m on different pills and we get them in the mail so we’re not running the town every day. We order [vaccines] for...

Indiana is experiencing historic flooding with many Postal Employees and their families impacted by the water. Roads and bridges have been washed out, water levels continue to rise and we are experiencing electrical failures in some areas.

Travel to and from work is treacherous in flooded areas. It is imperative you protect yourself and use common sense. Your form 50 office may be closed or curtailed in services for the coming days. You should stay in contact with your immediate supervisor/postmaster if you are impacted in any way. Employees unable to physically make it to work may be eligible for leave under the ELM.

Management has an obligation to keep you gainfully employed and may expect you to work in another office if yours has been flooded or damaged. Guarantees provided in the CBA set the minimum work hours for your employee category.

Our Human Relations Department administers the Postal Employee Relief Fund. The fund is designed to help APWU members who have sustained substantial damage from a natural disaster. Please visit the APWU website for info to see if you qualify.

If you or a co-worker need assistance, please notify your respective State Business agent promptly so we can offer help.

In Solidarity,

Doug Brown
IPWU President
