Today we David Halderman, 40 years old‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Squad 18 in Manhattan. He joined the fire department in June of 1992‚ following in the footsteps of his father who retired after 30 years and his brother Michael who was recently promoted to Battalion Chief. At the time of his death he was on the list to be promoted to Lieutenant. He was promoted posthumously. He loved the job and in 1999 he transferred to Squad 18 in Manhattan to be in a busier house and more involved in rescue work. His happiest moment on the job was when he delivered a baby.

Today we Andrew Fredericks, 40 years old‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Squad 18 in Manhattan. A 21-year FDNY veteran‚ Fredericks was co-author of the FDNY’s Engine Company Operations Manual. He was a New York State-certified fire instructor‚ an instructor for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs‚ an adjunct lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice‚ and taught at fire service training meetings across the country. Lieutenant Andrew Fredericks responded to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center with Squad 18 of the Fire Department of New York. Squad 18 was one of five squad companies sent to rescue victims from the upper floors of One World Trade Center (the North Tower). Fredericks and members of Squad 18 were still in the building when it collapsed at 10:28 am, one hour and forty minutes after terrorists flew hijacked United Flight 11 into the tower.

Today we Lt. William E. McGinn, 43 years old‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Squad 18 in Manhattan. An 18-year FDNY he was among the first units to arrive at the scene of the World Trade Center disaster. As part of the day crew, Lt. McGinn had expected to be fully engaged in a day-long training drill on tanker explosions at the Fire Academy on Randall's Island. Instead, Squad 18 was one of the first units from Lower Manhattan to arrive at the scene of the plane crash.

We also honor John William Perry, 38 years old. Officer Perry had been employed with the New York City Police Department for eight years, Officer Perry was at police headquarters filing his retirement papers when he was notified about the first airplane striking the first tower. He rushed to the scene to assist with rescue operations and was killed when one of the towers collapsed. He was assigned to the 40th Precinct.

Today we honor Stephen Gerard Siller, 34 years old‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Squad 1 in Brooklyn. Stephen, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word over his scanner of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later. He returned to Squad 1 to get his gear. Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.

Today we honor Matthew David Garvey, 37 years old‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Squad 1 in Brooklyn. Matthew’s life was dedicated to the service of the people of America. Matt enlisted in 1981 at the age of 18. In his 10-year career he would make sergeant and become a squad leader in 2nd Anglico‚ an elite scout team that went into hostile territory ahead of ground troops. He served in Beirut and in operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Matthew joined the Fire Department in 1995 and earned his way into the Elite Squad 1 unit‚ based in Park Slope‚ Brooklyn. He was recently accepted to law school‚ was an active marine reservist.

Today we honor Robert Cordice, 28 years old‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Squad 1 in Brooklyn.
Mr. Cordice entered the Police Academy in 1993, and graduated in 1994. He was a police officer with the 13th Precinct, Manhattan, until Oct. 19, 1997. He then joined the Fire Department. Prior to his time at Engine 152 and Squad 1, he served one-year rotations at Ladder Co. 102, Brooklyn, and Engine Co. 1, Manhattan.

Today we honor Peter Carroll, 42 years old‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Squad 1 in Brooklyn. A firefighter for 19 years, Mr. Carroll first served in Ladder 18 in Manhattan before working out of Ladder 18 in Harlem and Ladder 80, Port Richmond. He worked at Brooklyn's Squad 1 for the last decade. Mr. Carroll, 42, lost his life while evacuating streams of people from one of the World Trade Towers.
