With our partnership with Feeding America, we’re helping bring Food as Medicine to life so more people can access nutritious food alongside nutrition education.

Across the country, health starts with what’s on your plate.
With support from Elevance Health Foundation, Feeding America is advancing a Food as Medicine approach that strengthens connections between food banks and health care providers.
On Long Island in New York, Island Harvest Food Bank — a member of the Feeding America network — has deployed food bank nutritionists inside two local health clinics. Patients are referred to the nutritionists, who provide nutrition education as well as access to a food pantry within the clinic, where patients can choose from healthy fresh fruit, vegetables and protein.
For Catherine Tulloch, Island Harvest’s nutrition coordinator, this work is personal.
“When I was younger, I had pre-diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure,” she explained. “I knew I needed to do something for my own health.”
Today, she walks patients through nutrition education and explains how the food they receive can be used to create healthy meals.
“We're able to help people eat more whole foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” she said. “We're able to also help them live a healthier lifestyle and reduce the risk of chronic illness and disease.”
“I’ve seen people who have reduced their blood sugar by simply coming in and learning how to add fiber to their diet. That’s the best part of this work, is seeing how this is benefiting not only the patient but their family as well.”
