Researchers from the BioRescue consortium and biotech firm Colossal Biosciences aim to resurrect the northern white rhino through DNA modification and gene editing techniques using DNA from museum specimens. The project offers hope while scientists raise questions about long-term habitat viability.

A global assessment led by the University of Oxford found that 30% of island-dwelling reptiles are threatened, compared to only 12% of reptiles overall. The findings underline a critical knowledge gap and the urgent need for prioritized conservation in island ecosystems.

A new study led by the University of Oxford has revealed that reptiles confined to islands are facing a double jeopardy. Despite being more likely to go extinct than mainland species, they remain largely ignored by researchers compared to their mainland counterparts.

A recent Field survey confirmed that the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) exists in a peat-swamp forest in Lumut Maju, North Sumatra. Almost 20 miles beyond its previously assumed Range DNA evidence verified the species, underscoring the critical conservation value of non-protected peat-swamp ecosystems and the heightened risk posed by habitat fragmentation and palm-oil conservation.

The regularly used airstrip outside the town of Archers Post, in northern Kenya, was closed after being damaged in heavy rains, so my flight landed at an even tinier dirt airstrip on the other side of Samburu National Reserve. Sumatran rhinos, once thought to be eliminated in southern Sumatra, may still exist. Dogs from Working Dogs for Conservation found possible rhino s**t in Way Kambas National Park.

Initial tests are promising, but further confirmation is needed.

Conservationists are hopeful; any found rhinos would be a boost to this Critically Endangered species' survival, as there are fewer than 50 left globally.
