On July 14th, 2020, my baby boy, Joshua Christopher Hayes - beloved son, grandson, father, husband, brother, nephew, uncle and cousin - lost his battle with mental illness. Despite his struggles, Josh was a kind, gentle, loving and God-fearing young man. Like so many others affected by mental illness, Josh suffered in silence for fear of embarrassment and ridicule. Although he made every attempt t
o lead a normal life, he was constantly tormented by the ongoing battle in his brain. Plagued by paranoia, anxiety and depression, Josh fought each day for some semblance of normalcy. Tragically, his flawed reasoning led to a series of events that resulted in Josh being shot and killed instantly. Joshua was 22 years-old
He had just celebrated his Mom's birthday the day before he died. He was planning to marry his fiancee the day after he died. He had a five-year old daughter, and a 6 month-old son. Joshua is loved and terribly missed. The joy that eluded Joshua in this life was finally granted to him in the afterlife. Joshua's Joy Inc, is non-profit organization established for the purpose of stopping the stigma of mental illness. Like Joshua, thousands of people are affected by mental illness. Also like Joshua, many of those same people are embarrassed or ashamed of their condition; therefore, they never seek the help they need and, instead, suffer in silence. Joshua's Joy seeks to provide assistance and support for those suffering from mental illness as well as their families. Additionally, Joshua's Joy aspires to work with elected officials, community activists and school officials to create and implement legislation that will increase understanding of and provide screening for mental disorders. Our prayer is that those suffering from mental illness and their families will be able to share in Joshua's joy during their lifetimes. Don't suffer in silence. It's OK not to be OK. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
