“I started the day off waking up pretty early, and brushing my teeth. Shortly after we all got into the pool and had some fun playing games, and talking. In jamaica we went to the beach a variety of times, tried new foods, and learned their culture which was great.

We stayed in a nice house where they cooked us good food, and were very nice. I met two very nice people named Mrs. Deb, and Mr Craig who drove us around, and showed us many different cool places in jamaica. In general they really made the experience a lot better for us making everything easier and more fun. Jamaica was really fun overall, and was a great experience I would love to have again.

We also rode some horses, and had some fun. I liked the culture and all the different foods we were eating too. The experience had a big impact on me”

“In this journal entry I will be talking about how my jamaica trip Is going . First we did a tour around the house and got in the pool. The next day we learned about who the maroons were. I learned that the maroons were people whose spirit could not be broken. They also live in the wilderness and dangerous to encounter .
What I loved the most was the dancing at the end.

The best day so far was when we went to the blue hole . The blue hole is was a bunch of cliffs that you could jump into water from, which was super fun. After that, we rode horses in the water.

On Juneteenth we went to an amusement park called Mystic Mountain, but the food wasn’t all of that though. The 20th of June we went to the beach , I didn’t really like the beach only because i’m not a beach person unless we’re doing activities other than that I don’t like it .

Now onto the next day, we rode in the van for the longest ! The beach we went to was Negril beach which was very pretty and the sand was soft. and Then we went to this little restaurant/bar/cliff diving area type of place and it was very chill. I liked it a lot and once we left we got us some JERK CHICKEN ! so far this Jamaica trip is a 8/10”

“Today was actually a really fun day. I got to sleep in a little, which was awesome because I’ve been so tired lately. After I finally got up, we went to the beach, and it was perfect weather. I messed around in the water for a bit and just chilled in the sand. Then we went back home to cool off and relax, which was nice after being out in the sun.

Later, we went back out to eat, and I was starving by then. I ended up getting tacos, and they were so good, and they really hit the spot. I also got a strawberry lemonade, and it was probably the best drink I’ve had in a while. Everything about today just felt super chill and fun. Honestly, I wish every day could be like this. ”

“Today they had us wake up early cause we were going far to do a hike. Breakfast wasn’t that good but it put something on my stomach. We made our way to this place called Mystic Mountain and when we got there us was a bit confusing because we had to ride this like escalator thing and it was like a 15 minute ride just to get to the actual park.

But once we got there and actually started doing activities it was super fun. I went on this one ride where you can control your own speed until it was time to go zip lining. We did 5 different lines and I even went upside down. Zip lining was my favorite activity there. When it was over me and the girls went to do some other rides and swim in the pool. The other ride they had took you up pretty high and would kinda jerk you back and forth but it was really fun as well.

After Mystic Mountain we went to this place that had a waterfall and it was super beautiful, but we didn’t get to stay too long cause we went around closing time. Once it was time to close I went with a chaperone and the boys to come back to the bus and I got in trouble for not going with the other chaperone instead crazy but whatever. All the girls punishments were no pool for the night and so after dinner we all went to sleep instead.”

“Today was our first real day in Jamaica. For the first day in Jamaica our home away from home was Hugh and is probably one of the best places I've ever stayed. And nothing can for how this island drivers drive. Each decent down this mountain felt like a Rollercoaster. The first place we stopped at was An official Marron village and had the privilege of being given a tour by the Marron's chief.

He told us all about the history of Marrons. He actually taught me that the Marrons where the first inventors of Gorrila warfare something that was unknown to me. He told us stories and meanings hidden in the carvings outside the Yard.

It was then he brought us into a museum and showed us a demonstration of Jamaican music and it was during this demonstration I was able to see how music connected us. As they danced together i saw a connection much stronger then any language could Covey and it really put into perspective how connected we as black people.

Regardless of how far we go we are still connected by culture and that is something I believe will stick with me for a long time. After a car ride down the mountain we stopped at a jerk restaurant that served some of the best Jamaican food I've ever had. It was so good, if it wasn't for the amount of flies around i would have eaten 6 more portions.

Overall I am so excited to see how this trip goes”

“Today we woke up around 8 o’clock my host family made us some sausage and cheese sandwiches for breakfast. After that we got on the bus and went to a place called Mondha. 1 thing that I learned was In 1771 the slaves decided to rebel against slave owners. Then we had another guest speaker show us how it is to be at a carnival in the Dominican Republic. She showed us how they wear mask play music and just party the whole day. After that we left and ate chicken and rice for lunch at our host families house. After we ate me, Davon,Braden and my brother Abraham went and played basketball. And we went to the mall and I bought an apple flavored sprite. And after we went and got some food and I had smash fries. I had a good day today because I got to play basketball”

“I started the day off with trying a new food like dominican styled eggs and toast. Shortly after this, we went to see the culture and poverty of the people, and had a talk with this really nice tour guide. Next we went to the schools and met some kids, one of them made a handshake with me which was cool. After we left we went to eat dinner, and then went on cable cars seeing really cool things below us. Lastly me, and my family cooked a nice meal together which was fun, and delicious

I learned the difference of the cultural way we cook. I had a lot of fun, and had a good experience cooking with my family. We started off by cooking some fried plantains, and they really engaged with me on how to make them. Next we made some salami, but overall all the food was great, and I loved the fun we had”

“On Thursday we were told we were gonna go to the beach so I Woke up at 8am before we had breakfast at 8:30am once again there was cats and dogs all around us while eating. After I finished eating I headed upstairs to pack for our boat excursion I was nervous but excited to see the views. The boat excursion was honestly only about 3mins from our hotel so we immediately got on the boat once leaving. The wind was blowing so much my hair was wrapped around my face.

Our first stop was los canos it was so beautiful and secluded and the water was clear I even seen a couple longtom fish. At the next beautiful stop there was so much sea moss and snails it felt weird to swim but the water always felt nice. Once we left that spot we went to another beach it was in the middle of the ocean but the part where we was at the water was low & there was swings, we got passed fresh pineapple and watermelon. I love both fruit but the pineapple was amazing. After we left there we stopped at one more beach where we ate we had rice and beans, potato salad, fish and so much more a real dominican meal. Once everone finished we got on the boat and headed back to our bus & started our ride back to our home stay. Overall today’s trip was amazing & I would love to do it again. No puedo esperar a volver!”

“This morning i woke up at six AM in the morning hearing my mami Rosa in the kitchen. I got out of bed and went into the bathroom, i quickly showered, washed my face, and brushed my teeth. by then it was like 6:17. after i was dressed i went into the kitchen and my mami Rosa asked if i slept good and if i was hungry, i replied “sí” which means yes in spanish. (we were supposed to be standing outside and ready by 6:30). So she told me to sit down and she had different dishes sitting out on the table for me to pick and put on my plate to eat for breakfast. i had an omelet with a cinnamon roll, & agua! so then i went to my room and my mami Rosa came in and told me to unpack my luggage and put my clothes in the drawers, before i left. I did just that then by the time i was done, my mami rosa said “makenzy” and i said sí mami! She showed me that she had packed my lunch. I was like wow gracias mami and hugged her. I went back into the room and was finishing packing my bookbag for the next days then i hear “Makenzy” again, i came up there and she was saying that the bus was waiting outside for me to leave with YGP! so i said adios mami gracias. i walked through the apartments to get to the front gate. the guard opened the gate and i got on the bus and greeted YGP with buenos dias. on the bus we picked up our other YGP members from they host family’s! we had morning motivation and we went over the things that we liked and needed to adjust too.

We headed to the restaurant that we were eating at. I ordered “still marlo fried rice with chicken and shrimp with a side of grilled vegetables” and some lemonade. it was okay. we stayed there for about 50 mins! once everyone was done eating, we checked out the pool that was connected to the restaurant. it was pretty. after that a man with a hat glasses and a button up striped shirt gave tours to five different places.

The last place was the best place. we went up a mountain a little to seeeeeee…..”
