As we close National Youth Violence Prevention Week, it is important to remember the work we must continue to do as a community to cultivate safe communities for our youth. Last week, we were honored to sponsor and participate in the Stand on Peace: Peace Walk hosted by Hoosiers Concerned About Gun Violence. 🎯

Action Item: Elevate youth voices and share our Youth/Young Adult Violence Surveys with youth, schools, and organizations in your life who can help us shape our next steps as a Coalition. MCYVPC Press Release

MCYVPC Crisis Response Task Force Responds to 14-year old Deandra Staples being found shot and killed on the morning of Saturday, January 11, 2025 with a Commitment to Healing and Action

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 17, 2025

14-year old Deandra Staples Found Shot and Killed on January 11, 2025

Indianapolis, IN – In response to the recent homicide of 14-year old Deandra
Staples, the Marion County Youth Violence Prevention Coalition’s Crisis Response Task Force expresses its deepest concern and commitment to supporting the affected families and the community.

“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this tragedy,” said Della Brown, Crisis
Response Taskforce Chair. “This is a moment to come together as a community to
support each other and take action toward lasting change.”

MCYVPC Crisis Response Task Force will be taking the following steps:

• Hosting a Community Conversation to create a safe space for the community to
talk about the happening and express their feelings. This Community Conversation will take place at Frederick Douglass Park on January 23, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

• Hosting a Focus Group on youth violence and its impact to help understand the
root causes, explore impact, collect youth perspectives on solutions, create a safe space for dialogue, empower youth voices, and assess community needs - TBA

• Hosting a Town Hall to share the focus group findings and gather feedback from a
wider audience, including parents, educators, and local organizations to ensure that
insights gathered during the focus groups are not only heard but also lead to tangible change - TBA

The Crisis Response Task Force is calling on the community to join in these efforts to promote healing, understanding, and long-term solutions.
