The Lawnmower Project

The Lawnmower Project The Lawnmower Project refurbishes old lawnmowers and gives them to kids who want to earn money. We teach them all the aspects of running their own business.

This, in turn, teaches them valuable life skills that will carry with them forever. The Lawnmower Project started when I realized two things. First, I learned with a little help from google how easy it is to fix a lawnmower. Second, I noticed that when a lawnmower breaks down, people are more apt to just put it at the end of their driveway and buy a new one instead of wasting time and money trying

to fix it. So, I started picking up lawnmowers on the side of the road to see if I could fix them. Quickly, I started to accumulate many lawnmowers. And since the typical household really only needs one lawnmower, I had to think of something to do with all of them. Then I decided that I would simply donate them to kids who could use them to mow lawns and make money in their neighborhood. The only caveat for the free lawnmower will be that they have to choose at least one elderly resident in their neighborhood and mow their lawn for free the entire season.

From one of the kids’ mom:

Jason will also email you but I wanted let you know how much I appreciate this experience for Jason. It's been difficult getting customers but he didn't give up. He's made about $400 which was great for him but that wasn't the most important part.

His first customer was a lady in the neighborhood that he was unsure about when he was younger. She asked him to start doing her lawn for $20 a week. The first couple of times she seemed strict but after a few weeks they became friends. She made him laugh and smile that was not easy to do. Jason was very close with his grandmother that died 2 years ago. The neighborhood lady did not replace his grandma but it was nice having a grandma type around.

Unfortunately the neighborhood lady passed away suddenly a few weeks ago. It mad him sad but he was so glad he got to know her before she passed away. She knew she was dying but nobody else knew. That experience was priceless for him.

Also it taught him independence and he loved making his own money to go out with his friends.

He will continue to do this next year. Thank you for giving him this experience.

Gave a mower to another refuge family new to our city. This time from Congo. Wish I would have gotten a picture of the smile on his face, and when he hugged me.
