Helping sea turtles is simple:
Lights on = bad for turtles.
Lights off = good for turtles.
Sea turtles dig the dark! 🌌
It’s that time of year when we start noticing more lights on! During the nesting season, it’s strictly forbidden to use white light while out on the beach. This applies to both indoor and outdoor house lights as well! White lights can disorient nesting turtles, causing them to mistake their nesting area for the ocean. As shown in the image below, a nesting green turtle tried to nest but unfortunately got confused and turned around, abandoning her attempt. If you need light, use a red LED light, change your exterior lights to amber and face them down, and use your blinds to block your inside lights!
As of June 5th the UCF MTRG has recorded the following nest numbers on the Brevard County portion of the ACNWR (21 km/13 mi):
Leatherback - 62
Loggerhead - 6,409
Green turtle - 276
Kemp's ridley - 1
