DIPG Awareness Day is celebrated annually on May 17, falling within Brain Tumor Awareness Month. It is dedicated to spreading hope about Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an aggressive and currently incurable form of childhood brain cancer, while advocating for increased research funding.
Why DIPG Awareness Matters
Severity: DIPG is the leading cause of childhood death due to brain tumors. It makes up about 10-15% of pediatric brain tumors. The Disease: It is an aggressive, inoperable tumor located at the base of the brain (in the pons) that affects breathing, swallowing, and motor functions. Prognosis: Historically, there have been very few advancements in treatment options over the past 35 years.
Today we honor our Mikey and all the other angels who were taken too soon by this deadly disease as well as the warrior and those family, their families fighting every day with hope and courage.
