With the recent passing of Dale Young, the Foundation is in conversation with the Grayson County Historical Society for future direction and preservation of records and donations. The availability of New River Notes is a primary online resource that continues and will always be safeguarded for the future. You may know the names of Rusty Vaughn, Casey Cornette, Rich Ballard, and myself, Don Thomas. We are committed to navigating the journey ahead with profound respect for all that has gone before in our beloved Grayson County, Virginia.

From Rich Ballard:

On behalf of the Grayson County Heritage Foundation I'm happy to announce the release of an update to the New River Notes website. We owe George a big thank you for all of his time and effort in making this update.

This update is primarily a change to the system used to manage the site and some of the format and style of the pages. It does not include any significant change to the content or organization of NRN. This update will make it easier for us to manage the site and make changes to the content.

NRN is now built on the WordPress platform. This will make it much easier to change content. And much of that can be done with little or no knowledge of the HTML language used to format individual pages. Some of the things that are now much easier to do are:

Edit an existing page to correct errors or add updated information.
Add a new page that was prepared with your favorite word processor.
Delete information that is now known to be incorrect.

There's a lot of potential for improvement in NRN. But that can't be done without the help of many others. We'll need to recruit people to help manage and review new and updated content. We need researchers and authors to generate new content. There's much that can be done but it will require the support from those of you with interest in the history and genealogy of the upper New River area.

A little history -- NRN was first published by Jeff Weaver around 1998. I and Barbara Norvell worked with Jeff to revise the pages, clean up the organization, and move it from a server in Grayson County to the current newrivernotes.com URL. I think that was around 2005. Jeff transferred ownership of the site to the Grayson Heritage Foundation soon before his death. A short time after that I, Barbara and mostly George Simmons did more cleanup and modernization with the use of Adobe Dreamweaver. Over the last year or so George has single handedly converted that Dreamweaver version so that it is now managed with WordPress.

Visit the New River Notes website and scroll through the new version. You should see a new banner across the top with a picture of the New River. If you don't see the new page try to refresh your browser.

If you would like to discuss NRN you can reply to this message, send a private message to [email protected] or visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/GCVHF/

Troy Melvin and Sophronia Boyer Thomas are my g-grandparents. Pictured is their home in Grant. I lived there with my mom and dad, Raymond and Paxey Hash Thomas, after my birth in 1951 until moving to Marion around 1955.
My grandfather, Orrin Melvin Thomas is not pictured, so the photo pre-dates his birth in 1899.
