June is doing double duty in the garden 🌱

Most gardeners focus on what can be planted right now, but June is also the time to start thinking ahead to your fall harvest.

🌿 **Direct sow outdoors now:**
β€’ Green beans β€” plant every few weeks for a steady harvest through summer.
β€’ Cucumbers and summer squash β€” a June planting helps replace vines lost later in the season.
β€’ Beets and carrots β€” best sown directly into the garden since root disturbance can affect growth.
β€’ Okra β€” thrives in hot weather and loves summer heat.
β€’ Southern peas β€” productive plants that also help improve soil fertility.

🌱 **Start indoors for fall harvests:**
β€’ Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower β€” start now and transplant later for cool-season production.
β€’ Brussels sprouts β€” a long-season crop that benefits from cooler temperatures and light frosts.
β€’ Kale β€” excellent for fall and winter harvests, with flavor that improves after frost.
β€’ Lettuce β€” summer heat can hinder germination, making indoor starts a great option.

A simple rule to remember: if a crop develops a deep taproot, sow it directly where it will grow. If it needs cool weather to finish strong, start it now so it's ready for fall. πŸŒΏπŸ‚

Most people around here just dump their onions on a tarp after harvest and call it a day. But then winter hits, and they start finding mushy spots, mold, and a bunch of bulbs that never actually cured right in the first place.

The old-school homesteaders always did things a bit differently. They’d hang their onions up in bunches right where a good breeze could reach every single bulb, giving them all the time they needed to dry down naturally.

By the time January rolls around, the difference is night and day. One guy is tossing half his harvest straight into the compost pile, while the folks who actually took the time to hang-cure theirs are still pulling rock-solid onions out of the pantry for dinner.

Last couple of days have been busy but a blast!!!! Yesterday we had a 19 middle schoolers from Blue Springs school district come out to learn about Animal husbandry, how soil health is important on the farm, how the animals help the soil, regenerate farming, urban farm and what careers you can choose in these fields.
Then last night we finished the last class at Blue River Church in Belton, how to put food up using water bath canning. We made salsa.
Today we had a young man come out and help on the farm. Bransyn helped in the chicken coop then worked really hard on helping me get the s j.g ade garden native plant area prep as lasagna garden beds. We will start planting in them tomorrow!!!
Hannah Joy Poindexter cane out this morning with her little ones. They are so cute helping plant the chicken flower box. They planted herbs, flowers and tomatoes in it.
