Ohio lawmakers are considering legislation to give survivors of sexual assault five years to file a lawsuit against a perpetrator.

The proposal is before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The state's current law gives adult survivors up to two years to seek civil justice, but research shows survivors of sexual violence often experience long-lasting trauma, which can affect their ability to file a lawsuit soon after an assault.

Today at the Two Days in May Conference in Columbus, Artemis Center’s Executive Director, Jane Keiffer, received the Special Courage Award in recognition of extraordinary leadership, compassion, and commitment to survivors.

This recognition carries deep meaning. At a time when many communities across our state continue to face gaps in services, uncertainty, and increasing complexity in responding to survivors, Jane and Artemis Center stepped forward with courage and conviction to ensure that survivors of sexual assault in Montgomery County would not be left without support.

This was not simply an operational decision. It was a decision rooted in humanity, accountability, and the belief that survivors deserve access to safety, advocacy, and healing no matter the challenges before us. Taking on this work requires vision, sacrifice, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to community.

At Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, we are thrilled to see these critical sexual assault services expanded in Montgomery County and deeply grateful for partners willing to lean into the work with intentionality and courage. Expanding access to survivor centered services matters. It changes lives, strengthens communities, and ensures survivors are met with support rather than silence.

In moments where systems are strained, true leadership reveals itself in those willing to say, “We will not let survivors fall through the cracks.” That is exactly what Artemis Center and Jane Keiffer demonstrated.

Today’s recognition is a reminder that courage does not always look loud. Sometimes courage looks like showing up when the work is difficult. It looks like saying yes when the need is overwhelming. It looks like choosing responsibility over comfort and community over silence.

Congratulations to Jane Keiffer and the entire Artemis Center team on this well deserved recognition. Thank you for leaning into the work, for standing in the gap, and for helping ensure survivors in Montgomery County continue to have access to critical services and support. Survivors deserve nothing less.
