Since our start in 1982, Truman Heartland Community Foundation has made it our mission to improve the lives of the people within Eastern Jackson County and surrounding communities. The mission of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation is to improve area communities by promoting and serving private giving for the public good. tanding of needs in the community have combined to make that all-important difference we all seek to make. The approach THCF takes in working in the community can be as various as the needs to be served. The Community Foundation champions each cause, passion and charitable goal of our donor partners and ensures their dreams are realized through their charitable funds. Whether providing scholarships, establishing family finds, supporting faith communities, creating international programs, forming new charities, or raising support for existing charities, the Community’s Foundation has, or will, touch every life throughout our region. As one of the region’s most respected community foundations, THCF helps donors turn charitable dollars into major investments, creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.

♿ Job One KC is providing employment opportunities and community services for individuals with disabilities. As a 2025 Grant Recipient of $5,500, funds will support the purchase of sofas, plants, rugs, projector/screen for the Community Based Day Services.

2026 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR | LEE’S SUMMIT | LAURA MAXWELL | Nominated by Mayor Beto Lopez

For nearly three decades, Laura Maxwell dedicated her career to the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and Education Foundation, where she built meaningful partnerships between schools, businesses, and the community while helping students prepare for future success. That passion for connecting people naturally led to a lifetime of civic leadership. Following her retirement from the district, Laura continued to invest her time and talents through the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Eastland Giving Circle, John Knox Village Foundation, Legacy for Lee’s Summit Parks Foundation, and as co-chair of the LSGoal26 World Cup celebration events. Through every role, Laura has remained committed to bringing people together to strengthen Lee’s Summit for generations to come.

For more than two decades, Rene Purtee has helped strengthen Raytown through her career at Arvest Bank, where she has become a trusted partner to local businesses by connecting entrepreneurs with the resources and relationships they need to succeed. That same spirit of service has shaped her volunteer leadership throughout the community. Rene has served the Raytown Area Chamber of Commerce, the Raytown Educational Foundation, Truman Heartland Community Foundation, and numerous school and civic organizations, always leading with humility and a willingness to roll up her sleeves. Continuing a family legacy of public service, Rene has dedicated her life to helping Raytown thrive through collaboration, leadership, and genuine care for her community.

2026 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR | GRAIN VALLEY | PASTOR MIKE CASSIDY | Nominated by Mayor Bob Headley

Since moving to Grain Valley in 2017, Pastor Mike Cassidy has become a familiar and trusted presence throughout the community. As Lead Pastor of Faith United Methodist Church, he believes ministry extends far beyond the walls of the church, investing his time wherever people need encouragement and support. Mike serves with organizations including Bright Futures Grain Valley, the Ministerial Alliance, Best Buddies International, and Friendship Club, while also volunteering as a Lunch Buddy at Stony Point Elementary and serving as Chaplain for the Grain Valley Police Department. Whether mentoring students, supporting families, or simply showing up for community events, Mike has dedicated himself to helping Grain Valley become a stronger, more caring community.

Every year, Truman Heartland Community Foundation puts local nonprofits through a thorough process to be awarded a grant through our Competitive Grants Program.
