Inspiring generosity to advance community impact through the power of charitable giving in Eastern Jackson County and beyond. Founded in 1982.

The mission of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation is to improve area communities by promoting and serving private giving for the public good. Donors are the difference at THCF. The difference their dollars make coupled with the foundation’s understanding of needs in the community have combined to make that all-important difference we all seek to make. The approach THCF takes in working in the community can be as various as the needs to be served. The Community Foundation champions each cause, passion and charitable goal of our donor partners and ensures their dreams are realized through their charitable funds. Whether providing scholarships, establishing family finds, supporting faith communities, creating international programs, forming new charities, or raising support for existing charities, the Community’s Foundation has, or will, touch every life throughout our region. As one of the region’s most respected community foundations, THCF helps donors turn charitable dollars into major investments, creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.

PRESIDENT'S BLOG | The Growing Impact of Scholarship Giving

We are just wrapping up our 2026 Scholarship Season and have made our final payments for the fall semester. We are busy preparing for the next scholarship cycle. On December 1st, applications will open for the 2027 season, and they close on February 15th. If you have family or friends with college-age students, please help spread the word about this scholarship opportunity through your community foundation.

In Memory: Elizabeth McClure | A Letter from our CEO, Phil Hanson

It is with deep sympathy that I share that Liz McClure passed away on Wednesday, October 7th. She died peacefully at home after a 4-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Liz touched our lives, and many of you in our Truman Heartland Community Foundation Family over her 26-year career with the Foundation.

Many of you probably have already heard this sad news, but we are sending this to ensure the whole THCF Family is informed.

THCF would not be the organization it is today without Liz’s leadership. She was truly the foundation of this Foundation and the only staff person to have worked with all 4 CEOs of THCF.

I had the pleasure of working with Liz for 11 of those 26 years, until her retirement in December of 2020.

Liz’s boundless energy and commitment shaped so much of our work, from the Toast to Our Towns Gala and Youth Advisory Council, to our annual Grants Luncheon and Scholarship Reception.

And as many of you know, she developed deep and caring relationships with those she served through her work.

Her services will be on Saturday, October 17th at Messiah Lutheran Church (613 S Main Street, Independence MO, 64050.) Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM and the funeral service at 2:00 PM.

Please keep her husband Gary in your prayers, as well as her son Todd and his wife Ginger, and her beloved granddaughter Georgia. I am sure I will see many of you at her services.

| Youth Volunteer Corps Kansas City (Youth Volunteer Corps)

✋ Youth Volunteer Corps engage youth in team-based service experiences that build life and work skills while inspiring a lifetime ethic of service. As a 2025 Grant Recipient of $3,000, funds will support the Youth Volunteer Corps 2026 Summer Program. Each week features 4-5 service projects in a camp-style format. Helping youth connect their work to social issues, develop critical thinking, and gain a deeper insight into their service.
