I apologize that this did not post Monday when I received the news. I am still trying to figure out why it didn’t. The service and funeral for Leila will be held Thursday December 5. It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Leila Cohoon of Leila’s Hair Museum in the Inited States. She has left this world and was surrounded by family in her final moments. She is survived by 2 children, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Her museum is open to scheduled tours but we ask your patience and prayers as her family grieves her passing. We will pass on any information we receive about any funeral services and locations to send flowers, cards, or donations for her. We encourage everyone to share their stories and pictures of Leila, her museum, and even any hair worked items. Leila leaves behind a legacy of having trained 65 students in over 70 years of collecting hair work. Her collection turned museum of over 3,000 pieces has made history and set Independence, Missouri of the United States on the map. Her love for hairwork has been shared in multiple countries and inspired many artists in hairwork. We will continue to share her inspiration, legacy, and love of Hairwork.

Welcome to Wednesday! We are delighted to share another item of antiquity with you.

This is a magnificent framed hair work wreath in the horseshoe shape. The flowers are made in at least 3 hair colors if not 4. There are 4 methods used in this wreath. We see the single gimp (or looped) method, the loop method - on the tops of the wreath and in the sides, the spiral single gimp method, and the 3 part basket weave method. The 3 part basket weave takes a great deal of time to make and a single petal can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour to make. It is the even weaving and tension that are the most difficult to maintain for an even piece. Pull too tightly and the leaf shifts and the thickness changes. Sadly, the frame is damaged in 2 locations, yet it does not take away from this gorgeous wreath worthy of a top shelf in any collection!!!!

The frame measure 13.75 inches ( 35 cm) long by 12 inches ( 30.5 cm) wide by 2 inches ( 5 cm ) deep. There are no details, names, dates, key, or companion pieces with this wreath. Welcome to Monday! We are delighted to share another item of antiquity with you!

This is a framed sentimental picture made of hair that is flat worked/ pallete worked. We see cypress trees, and a fir tree in blonde hair, and another tree in dark brown human hair. We see 2 doves in flight, flying towards each other, grass in different hair colors, a thistle to the left of the dark brown tree, and a building all made of human hair in a variety of colors. This is estimated to be circa 1840 in a frame with the backing paper is torn and you can see the metal tabs that hold the work into the frame. I has a hanger but no easel back stand.

Welcome to Sunday! We are delighted to share another hair worked item with you!

This is a stunning human hair embroidery in a gilt frame. This picture is in human hair of blonde, brunette, and black hair. We see trees, a river, a fence and a church. There is a home with thatched roof, crows flying over the field and a horse pulling a wagon. All embroidered on silk, but it looks like the silk has received some slight damage and has some deterioration in the corner which is consistent with age.

The frame measures 17.72 inches ( 45 cm) long by 14.17 inches ( 36 cm) wide and 1.18 inches ( 3 cm) deep. The piece is attributed to a Sally Guyn of 1811 and was in the family for 200 years. Welcome to Thursday! We are delighted to share another hair worked item of antiquity with you!

This is an amazing table braided human hair brooch set in 14 karat gold findings with seed pearls. In the center we see 3 seed pearls that are flanked with a set of leaves. Flanking the leaves are a set of berries with gold findings. The berries are open weave, hollow form table braided human hair. It looks like the bulbs have collapsed. All of the hair in this brooch is all the same color. Beside the berries are a set of crescent moons in etched setting. They are of the same braided pattern as the bulbs.

We see a set of chains draped across the front and 3 teardrop dangles with gold caps below. The teardrop in the center has a gold bead above it. The center and right side teardrop dangles look as if they have received damage and shifted making them shorter and more plump then the undamaged teardrop on the left..

the pin is long and comes out over the end of the brooch which is the style seen for these pieces. Often times, the pin would be cut and shortened in later years by the owners but this one has the pin intact, even though it is slightly bent. there are no hallmarks or engraving upon the piece. This brooch measures 1.97 inches (5 cm) wide by 2.46 inches ( 6.25 cm ) long.

Welcome to Tuesday! We are delighted to share another item of antiquity with you.

This is a fantastic framed hair work wreath in the horseshoe shape. There are seashells on the outer frame for decoration. Making artwork from seashells, beads, seeds, feathers, fish scales, hair, and other natural materials was a craft encouraged to the ladies in the 19th century. This framed piece shows 2 of those skills in a singular presentation. There are tiny beads for accents inside the flowers. We see at least 4 different hair colors from blonde to brown. We see a variety of methods that include the single gimp (looped) method, inverted single gimp (or looped) , twisted single gimp, and loops. A few of the loops have come loose and look like brooms or sprays of hair wrapped and added to the wreath. This is till a lovely wreath even with the loose pieces. There is the indication that at least 3 different people worked on this wreath.

The frame measure 17.5 inches ( 44.45 cm) long by 20.5 inches ( 52.07 cm) wide by 3.5 inches ( 8.89 cm ) deep. This is currently for sale on live auctioneer from seller Gray's Auctioneers in Cleveland, Ohio in the USA as lot number 0060. We consider that they own the copyright to these pictures.

Welcome to Sunday! We are delighted to share another item of antiquity with you!

This is a fantastic framed flat work/ palette worked human hair & painted mourning piece that is set in a frame. We see an urn draped in a shroud which symbolize grief and loss. There is a weeping willow representing mourning, that sits on the right side of the picture with some leaves and branches that have come loose. We see small pansies also called the hearts' ease on the left side of the urn. The rose bush with a bud snapped indicates the death of a child and loose hair from the leaves sits on the right side of the urn. We also see a tree that has been cut showing a life cut short sitting on the left side of the piece. There are several colors of hair in this piece and it could use a little re-gluing. The blue sky behind is visible and we see crushed /pulverized/ macerated hair in the grass and on accent on the urn.

There are 2 notes added to the inside of the work that are in French and a label on the back also in French all of which are very hard to read. This frame measures 6.26 inches (15.9 cm) long by 5.6 inches (14.2 cm) wide.

Welcome to Saturday! We are delighted to share another hair worked item with you!

This is a breathtaking bracelet of table braided human hair. Set in 15 karat golds with lovely etchings, this bracelet's findings are most unique! The band is table braided human hair in a pattern that can be seen in Mark Campbell's 1871 book, ' Self Instructor in the art of Hair work, Dressing Hair, Making Curls, Switches, Braids, and Hair Jewelry of Every Description" called the fancy tight braid and it is the 92nd pattern from the front of the book. The braid is hollow with a form in the center to hold the shape of the braid from collapsing.

In the open channels of the wrapped ribbon design on the front clasp of this bracelet, is set table braided human hair of the same color but in a different pattern that is also in Mark Campbell's book called the acorn tight braid which is the 90th pattern from the front of the book.

The connector that latches the bracelet is intact and functional. There is a safety chain also connected to the pinch latch. There is slight hairs coming loose that is consistent with use and the band has a slight reddish hue on it that is not part of the original hair color. The same hair in the band is set in the channel in the front but the hair in the channel front does not have signs of reddish hue to it. This bracelet has no hallmarks and is estimated to be circa 1870.

Welcome to Thursday! We are delighted to share another hair worked item with you!

This is a beautifully made human hair embroidery in a frame. There is a the picture in human hair of a hunter with his gun sitting under a tree on a rock. In front of him is his faithful dog sitting upright for his attention. There is a bird of some kind laying in the grass beside the dog indicating that it retrieved it. I see a scythe leaning against what seems to be a pillar but I could be wrong. Above the work in black human hair is a string of flowers and some decorative ribbon. We see where the artist drew on the fabric and worked around it. This is mounted in a frame between 2 pieces of glass and measures 5.51 inches (14 cm) long by 4.92 inches (12.5 cm) wide. The seller estimates this to have been made in 1808.
