The Buchanan County Health Trust is pleased to award over $74,000 in grant funding to area organizations to support health and medical-related projects and equipment.

Grant recipients include:
•$10,000 to Fairbank Elementary-Wapsie Valley Every Child Plays Inclusive Playground
•$7,024 to City of Independence Iowa, Fire Department for Streamlight Survivor Pivot Units
•$5,000 to Sleep in Heavenly Peace - IA, Buchanan Co
•$9,360 to Buchanan County EMS Association for mass casualty preparedness tourniquets
•$10,000 to Kidsville for safe playground resurfacing
•$800 to Lamont Iowa Fire and Rescue for a CPR/trauma manikin
•$398 to East Buchanan Community Schools for a wheelchair
•$11,000 to Winthrop Fire Department for a new grass fire truck
•$4,302 to Buchanan County Health Center for a patient safety sit assist device and weather protective items for the residents of Lexington Estate
•$3,500 to Buchanan County Emergency Management for new AEDs
•$14,903 to the City of Independence, IA Government for AEDs

Since its founding in 1989, the Health Trust has awarded over $1.2 million to local nonprofit organizations in need of medical or health related equipment, supplies, training, and/or educational needs.
The next grant application deadline is November 15, 2026.

The Buchanan County Health Trust’s grant deadline is quickly approaching. Due on June 15th, Buchanan County non-profit organizations in need of funding for health, medical, or wellness related projects, equipment, and/or training may submit grant requests by visiting buchananhealthtrust.com. Grant requests will be reviewed and awarded by the Buchanan County Health Trust Board of Directors in July.

The Independence Fire Department is proud to announce the addition of Ballistic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to better protect our firefighters.

We have recently taken delivery of ballistic vests, a bullet-resistant and stab-resistant protection designed to provide an added layer of safety during high-risk incidents.

"While our mission remains centered on fire suppression, EMS, and rescue operations, today’s emergency responders face an evolving environment. Preparation is not optional, it’s our responsibility." Fire Chief Hayward

These vests were made possible through a generous grant from the Buchanan County Health Trust. Their support allows us to proactively equip our firefighters with tools that enhance safety and readiness without placing additional burden on local taxpayers.

The Buchanan County Health Trust is pleased to award over $90,000 in grant funding to area organizations to support health and medical-related projects and equipment.

Grant recipients include:
•$31,500 to Buchanan County Health Center for a new recumbent bike for the Wellness Center and a TIMS Machine for advanced swallow studies
•$12,208 to the City of Independence Iowa, Fire Department for ballistic personal protective equipment
•$1,250 to Immanuel Lutheran Church- Indee for nursing program training and equipment
•$12,500 to Jesup Fire Department for new SCBAs (self-contained breathing apparatus)
•$6,919 to Buchanan County Emergency Management for AEDs and trauma bags
•$3,139 to City of Hazleton Fire Dept for helmet accessories and a thermal camera
•$15,000 to the City of Independence, IA Government for AEDs
•$5,320 to Buchanan County EMS Association for first responder carbon monoxide detectors
•$2,730 to Winthrop KidsCorner for an AED, LifeVac, and CPR/First Aid training
