ON THIS DAY: Dr. Richard Lawler performed the first successful kidney transplant on June 17th, 1950. The recipient was Ruth Tucker, a 44-year-old woman who had polycystic kidney disease (PKD).

That same year, the Kidney Foundation of Ohio was founded—beginning decades of support for people living with kidney disease.
