Jesus has defeated death by His resurrection from the dead!
That is great news… but what does it mean? What is the significance of Jesus’ resurrection, and what does it have to do with our faith?
We know that those who sin deserve to die (Romans 6:23). On Friday, we reflected on Christ’s death, and how that was in our place as the final Passover Lamb(Isaiah 53:10-12).
What happens when someone who does not deserve to die, dies? It’s only happened one time in history-to Jesus.
There’s two things we need to see here:
1. Jesus was raised from the dead to prove that He was legit. God the Father showed everyone that Jesus’ message was true and that He was indeed the messiah (Romans 4:25, Matthew 16:1-4)
2. Jesus was likewise raised from the dead because he was the Holy One, who cannot see corruption (Acts 2:22-28, Psalm 16:10). As the perfect one, Jesus did not deserve death, so death could not hold Him and he renders it defeated!
Why does this matter for us?
When we place our faith in Christ, we are united to him in a relationship, and we reap all the benefits from his death and resurrection (Romans 6:1-14). By God’s grace, we get what he deserves, which is life eternal!
Good news indeed! So, let us sing with Paul, knowing that our final enemy, death, is defeated in the glorious resurrection of our Lord!
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
