Independence Young Matrons were thrilled to distribute grants to local charities at the May 2026 Membership meeting. The funds for the grants are raised by the annual Holly and Mistletoe Tour and the new event, Champagne Christmas. Because of the hundreds of guests who attended the holiday events this year, we were able to increase our total grant distributions by over fifty percent.

In addition, the members of IYM were proud to provide scholarships to two exceptional local students.

IYM Elected Officers for the upcoming year were honored with a lovely installation ceremony and given a pink rose to convey the significance of their service.

We are grateful to Cindy McClain, Susan Sears and the staff of Ophelia’s Restaurant for hosting the monthly IYM meetings with delicious food and a beautiful banquet room.

This brings to a close a year of celebration of Independence Young Matrons’ 85 years of service. Early community projects included the “Grey Lady” program at Independence Regional Hospital, the first Kindergarten in Independence, and the first Library in Independence. Current programs include The Holly and Mistletoe Tour, and the Children’s Theatre that have been offered nearly every year since the 1950’s. Another wonderful year in the books🩷

The IYM 2026 Children's Theatre, was entitled "When I Grow Up", and was about career day at school. The original play, commissioned by IYM, written and directed by Ray Ettinger, was a delight for audiences. More than 2,000 attended the performances.

Thanks to:
Sermon Center for rehearsal space,
Truman High School for hosting performances,
and the many IYM volunteers who make it happen each year.

Congratulations to the cast! It was awesome!

Saturday the hospitality committee, chaired by Sharon Rock, hosted a wonderful Tea and Fashion show. Tables were decorated by committee members and tasty cookies and tea were shared. It was a lovely event and a perfect way to celebrate our IYM’s 85th year of helping our community. Please reach out to one of our members if you are interested in joining this caring group of women. We also know how to have a lot of fun😊🩷

We had another great meeting and lunch today. We celebrated two birthdays...Ann Gall and Judy Grubb. Bee keeper, Jess Popp shared some great information about keeping bees and why bees are important for our survival. I think she inspired several to want to become bee keepers. We really enjoyed meeting her and her guest, mom, Larissa Mullen. We also heard from Dr. Cynthia Grant, the Interim Superintendent of Independence School District. She gave us the details of the 2026 school bond that will be on the April 7th ballot. Don't forget to VOTE!

Our February membership meeting was full of beautiful music and an amazing history of Kansas City Jazz. Mr. Kent Rausch was our guest speaker! He’s not only an accomplished musician, but a passionate lover of KC Jazz. We were also given a presentation from Hope House and their mission to help families hurt by domestic violence.

We initiated two new members into our organization! We want to welcome Kelly Hatch and Ashley Adams.

Our January membership meeting was well attended today, despite the weather. We were enlightened about the FIFA World Cup in the KC metro area! Lees Summit Planning Manager, C. Shannon McGuire gave us an overview for the area and in particular, the activities planned for downtown Lee’s Summit.
We welcomed a new member, Paula Wheeler! We look forward to her being in our organization. We welcome any woman interested in checking us out to come to a meeting and learn more about how we help our community.
