The best bake sale in Independence is the Holly and Mistletoe Sweet Shop. The Sweet Shop is known for its wide range of delicious home-made sweet or savory treats. While you sip a cup of coffee, you can buy tickets for the exquisite raffle baskets. Christmas decor will be for sale also. Hours are 10 a.m to 5 p.m. December 3. Park in back and enter at the rear of the church.

What a wonderful time we had at our September Independence Young Matrons meeting! ❤️

We had the pleasure of hearing from local historian Bill Nicks, who brought President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his incredible place in American history to life. It was such an educational and engaging program, and we’re so thankful to Bill for sharing his knowledge with us!

We love the fellowship, friendships, and opportunities to learn together through IYM. We’re grateful for another wonderful meeting and the time spent together!

The IYM Book Club met on Monday, Sept 14. Kelly suggested the book "The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" and led the discussion. The book tells the story of a Japanese-American tween girl who meets a Chinese-American tween boy. Against the backdrop of the yearly years of WWII the two become friends. Sadly, the girl, along with her family, is shipped from Seattle to an interment camp. You will have to read the book to find out if they reconnect.

Independence Young Matrons started the 2026-2027 year off with their annual Fall Coffee at Good Shepherd Community of Christ Church. Independence Young Matrons were thrilled to distribute grants to local charities at the May 2026 Membership meeting. The funds for the grants are raised by the annual Holly and Mistletoe Tour and the new event, Ch*****ne Christmas. Because of the hundreds of guests who attended the holiday events this year, we were able to increase our total grant distributions by over fifty percent.

In addition, the members of IYM were proud to provide scholarships to two exceptional local students.

IYM Elected Officers for the upcoming year were honored with a lovely installation ceremony and given a pink rose to convey the significance of their service.

We are grateful to Cindy McClain, Susan Sears and the staff of Ophelia’s Restaurant for hosting the monthly IYM meetings with delicious food and a beautiful banquet room.

This brings to a close a year of celebration of Independence Young Matrons’ 85 years of service. Early community projects included the “Grey Lady” program at Independence Regional Hospital, the first Kindergarten in Independence, and the first Library in Independence. Current programs include The Holly and Mistletoe Tour, and the Children’s Theatre that have been offered nearly every year since the 1950’s. Another wonderful year in the books🩷

The IYM 2026 Children's Theatre, was entitled "When I Grow Up", and was about career day at school. The original play, commissioned by IYM, written and directed by Ray Ettinger, was a delight for audiences. More than 2,000 attended the performances.

Sermon Center for rehearsal space,
Truman High School for hosting performances,
and the many IYM volunteers who make it happen each year.
