Travel through the beautiful and austere Black Rock Desert High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area with Wildwood Expedition this year. Space in Spring and Autumn are still available. Register here: https://wildwoodopenlands.org/11267-2/

Rising from the heart of northwestern Nevada, the vast basin of the Black Rock country is framed by a dramatic sweep of mountain ranges that define both its geography and its spirit. To the east stand the Selenite Mountains, while the Granite Range rises behind us to the west. The Calico Mountains stretch across the northern horizon, and the Black Rock Range anchors the northeast skyline. Between these rugged uplands lies the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area (NCA), home to the largest playa in North America. This immense flat expanse is one of the last visible remnants of ancient Lake Lahontan, a vast Ice Age lake that once covered much of the Great Basin and left behind the stark, beautiful desert floor we see today.

Designated as a National Conservation Area in 2000, the Black Rock NCA encompasses approximately 1.2 million acres of high desert terrain. Within its boundaries there are more than 900 miles of designated routes, offering opportunities to explore remote valleys, volcanic formations, historic emigrant trails, and sweeping playas. The scale of the landscape is both humbling and exhilarating, inviting travelers to slow down, look closely, and appreciate the interplay of geology, history, and solitude that defines this remarkable region.

WE'RE MOVING!! Sort of....
We've got news and we're excited to share with all of you. Since 2022 Wildwood Open Lands Foundation has partnered with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and Washoe County, NV as conservation stewards of Betsy Caughlin Donnelly Park.

This winter we've made the decision to move onto a new challenge in a much bigger project. Starting in Spring 2026 we'll be taking on the conservation stewardship of the Canepa Ranch/Carcione Open Space located in Mogul, NV. This is offered to WOLF through the same adopt-a-spot program in partnership with KTMB and Washoe County.

The Canepa and Carcione Spaces are part of a 10-year open lands improvement and access plan that we are excited to participate in. Our initial tasks during 2026 will include invasive species removal and preliminary trail building. Our involvement and projects will transform as the improvement plan is executed over the coming years. We are thrilled to have this conservation of open lands opportunity and will be looking towards you all for your support in the field as we embark on this next chapter.

In 2026 we have committed to three stewardship dates. These dates are also listed on Wildwood's Event Page!!

March 14, 10am - 12pm : Canepa Ranch
July 18, 10am - 12pm : Carcione Open Space, this correlates with WOLF's HOWLING IV event.
November 7, 10am - 12pm : Canepa Ranch
