New data reveals a dismal reality for families across the region. Imperial County now leads the state of California in food insecurity, with one in five residents lacking reliable access to affordable, nutritious food.

🎒 FOR SOME CHILDREN, THE WEEKEND MEANS WONDERING WHERE THEIR NEXT MEAL WILL COME FROM.

The schools you see in this photo are part of a program working to change that.

Across Imperial County, 1,600+ children at 58 schools receive Weekend Backpacks filled with food for the days when school meals aren’t available.

And behind every number is a child, a family, and a story. 💙

Listen to the voices of some of the children who receive these backpacks - and hear what this program means to them.

For $250, you can provide one child with Weekend Backpacks for the entire school year. And thanks to longtime supporter Jack Tyler, first-time gifts can be matched through January 2027.

A backpack is more than food. It’s the comfort of knowing, “I’ll have something to eat this weekend.”

Help us make sure no child in Imperial County has to face the weekend hungry.

Please be aware that distribution days and times may vary due to the holidays. We encourage all clients to review the calendar carefully and stay connected with us through our social media channels for updates.

📢 Must provide your Food Bank ID card.
Please be sure to visit your assigned food distribution site.

📢 If you are not yet registered and would like to do so, please visit our food bank at:

🕗 Office hours: Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

How to Wash Fresh Produce

Step 1: Fill a clean bowl or sink with cool water.
Step 2: Add 1 cup of white vinegar to every 3 cups of water.
Step 3: Place your lettuce or produce in the mixture and let it soak for 5–10 minutes.
Step 4: Gently rub the leaves or produce with your hands to help remove dirt.
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly under cool running water to remove the vinegar.
Step 6: Dry with a clean towel or use a salad spinner before storing or serving.

Food Safety Tip: Wash produce right before eating or preparing it. Keep washed produce refrigerated in a clean container.
Note: Vinegar may help loosen dirt and reduce some surface bacteria, but the most important step is rinsing thoroughly with clean running water. Soap, bleach, or household cleaners should NEVER be used to wash fruits and vegetables.
