In this hands-on workshop, students will work with firm slabs to construct vessels defined by sharp lines, clean corners, and a subtle nod to modern architecture. The class will focus on building crisp, intentional forms while exploring the contrast between sharp and jagged lines, strong geometric shapes, and emphasized line work.

Attention will be given to precision, structure, and creating visual tension through angles and contour. In the second half of class, students will apply underglaze to highlight edges, accentuate line work, and add graphic surface detail.

Students will leave class with their vases ready for drying and firing; finished pieces will be available for pickup approximately 3–4 weeks later.

Summer Color is here 🌿🌊
Join Ilwaco Artworks for Ilwaco Art Walk 2026, June 28 from 11am-3pm.

We’re building a community clay installation together. Mark the coast into shared tiles featuring local wildlife, plants, and landmark stamps. Each impression becomes part of a larger collective story.

Refreshments provided, and a handmade mug giveaway closes out the day. Free, open, and hands-on.

PS Ilwaco Artworks Clay Olympics is happening just one day before Art Walk. If you don’t join us for that, you’ll be able to see the cool work from the Olympics during Art Walk.

In this low stakes intro class the instructor will demonstrate a handful of slab, scoring and forming methods and help participants create a ceramic mug of their own. Once the piece firmes up a bit the instructor will demonstrate refinement techniques and then we'll transition over to surface decoration and finishing.

Clay Plays are beginner-friendly, all-levels sessions where you’ll learn simple handbuilding techniques while making a functional or decorative piece. Come solo, bring a partner, or gather a group. No experience needed, just the desire to slow down and make something by hand.

Each session includes a live demo, all materials, and glaze and firing services. Make it today, treasure it forever. Finished pieces will be ready for pickup in 3 to 6 weeks. If you're visiting from out of town, we can ship your piece for $15 plus postage.

In this one-day workshop, students will explore the art of nerikomi by combining pigmented clays with naturally colored clay bodies to create layered compositions within slabs. Through cutting, stacking, and arranging colored clay, participants will develop bold patterns and visual movement embedded directly into the material itself.

These custom slabs will then be formed into functional utensil holders, allowing the pattern to wrap and flow around a larger surface. The focus will be on thoughtful composition, clean construction, and showcasing the inherent beauty of colored clay in a practical kitchen form.

Students will leave class with their utensil holders ready for drying and firing; finished pieces will be available for pickup approximately 3–4 weeks later.

In this one-day workshop, students will explore the art of kurinuki by carving and shaping slab-built forms into bold, textured mugs. Starting with thick slabs, participants will cut, twist, press, and pull the clay to create dramatic surfaces that feel raw, organic, and full of movement.

The focus will be on expressive texture, strong silhouette, and balancing sculptural energy with everyday function. Each mug will emerge as a tactile, one-of-a-kind piece—both rugged and comfortable in the hand.

Students will leave class with their mugs ready for drying and firing; finished pieces will be available for pickup approximately 3–4 weeks later.
