ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Challenger Learning Center of Greater Rochester welcomed a special group of students for an immersive learning experience on Monday.

The Kodak Center was created through a program of Monroe One BOCES to encourage students interested in math and science. At the Learning Center, students participate in a simulated space mission by taking on roles as mission control and a spaceflight crew to develop their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills outside the classroom.

“This is probably the greatest thing ever; it’s so cool how we get to interact with everything that there is for NASA,” said Jude Levi, a student. “I’m learning how to code things, how to communicate with other people, who I’ve never communicated with before. It’s really fun when you have someone on the other side that you actually know, so you can joke around on the mic a little; that’s what I was starting to do. It’s really fun though.”

28 students from Jarvis Middle School in Mohawk, New York, earned a simulated mission to Mars by participating in a school-sponsored essay contest. For the contest, students were asked to outline their personal characteristics, teamwork, and how they related to the legacy of the school’s namesake, Gregory B. Jarvis.

Jarvis, a payload specialist, was killed in the Challenger explosion on January 28, 1986.

Through Monday’s experience, students learned more about the Challenger and space exploration.

Students from Gregory Jarvis Middle School traveled all the way from Mohawk, NY to experience hands-on STEM learning at our Challenger Learning Center! Named after astronaut Gregory Jarvis, who lost his life in the Challenger mission, their visit carries forward his legacy of curiosity, exploration, and dedication to science.
