Ignacio High School Celebrates 50 Years of Wrestling Tradition at the Butch Melton Wrestling Tournament
Ignacio, Colo. — Ignacio High School and the Ignacio School District are proud to celebrate a major milestone in Southwest wrestling history: the 50th Annual Butch Melton Wrestling Tournament, one of the longest-running and most respected wrestling tournaments in the region.
Founded in 1976 by longtime Ignacio Head Coach Butch Melton, the tournament has grown into the oldest continuously running wrestling tournament in the Southwest. Coach Melton led the Ignacio wrestling program for 28 years, laying the foundation for a tradition rooted in dedication, hard work, and excellence, values that continue to define the tournament today.
From its earliest days, the Butch Melton Tournament set a high standard. Original brackets featured weight classes ranging from 92 pounds to heavyweight, welcoming competitors eager to test themselves against top-tier talent. Over the decades, the event has consistently attracted elite teams from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona, many of whom have gone on to win state team titles in their respective states.
In 2020, the tournament proudly expanded to include a girls' division, reflecting the continued growth of wrestling and the commitment to providing opportunities for all student-athletes. Today, the Butch Melton Classic features both boys and girls tournaments, run in an exciting round-robin scramble format that maximizes competition and mat time.
Ignacio’s commitment to wrestling excellence is evident not only in hosting this premier event but in the program’s achievements over the years.
Ignacio wrestling has produced:
11 State Champions
90 State Placers
20 District/League Championships
2 Regional Tournament Titles
In recognition of their lasting impact, two former Ignacio wrestling coaches have been honored on the Ignacio Coaches Wall of Fame, a testament to the program’s rich legacy.
Beyond the competition itself, the Butch Melton Tournament is known for its hospitality. The coaches' room and concessions have long been regarded as among the best on the circuit, reinforcing Ignacio’s reputation for hosting a first-class event.
While small in number, the Ignacio wrestling community takes immense pride in producing a high-quality tournament that continues to attract top-notch wrestlers and teams year after year. The success of the Butch Melton Classic would not be possible without the dedication of former wrestlers, wrestling families, Ignacio staff, and community members who generously contribute their time and energy.
As Ignacio High School celebrates 50 years of the Butch Melton Wrestling Tournament, the school district honors the past, celebrates the present, and looks forward to continuing a tradition that has shaped athletes, coaches, and communities across the Southwest for generations.
The Ignacio School District invites the community to come celebrate and support our Ignacio Bobcat wrestlers on Saturday, January 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The boys' tournament will take place at Ignacio High School, and the girls' tournament will be held at Ignacio Middle School. We encourage everyone to fill the stands and be part of this historic 50th anniversary event.
