Hope you enjoy our attempt at an Idyllwild Music Cartography...
This is a list of notable music and musicians that are connected to Idyllwild.
In reviewing it, it's impossible not to see the unusual amount of high caliber music talent to be found on this mountain for decades now. A reminder to you struggling artists out there that you're in good company...
Direct Song Connections:
“In Idyllwild” — Meredith Willson
This may be the purest musical connection to the town itself. Meredith Willson, best known as the composer of The Music Man, wrote “In Idyllwild” specifically for the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts (ISOMATA, now Idyllwild Arts). Unlike many of the songs associated with the hill, this composition was not merely influenced by Idyllwild—it was explicitly created in tribute to it.
“Hotel California” — The Eagles:
One of the strongest and most intriguing Idyllwild music stories concerns Hotel California. Longstanding lore, supported by handwritten references inside the album, places the writing of it in a little red cabin in “Idyllwilde,” using the old spelling of the town’s name and giving Idyllwild a direct connection to one of rock’s most iconic songs.
Songs written during Dolly Parton’s Idyllwild retreats:
Dolly Parton and Carl Dean maintained a longtime retreat cabin in Idyllwild. Multiple accounts describe the cabin as a place where Dolly wrote songs, played music, and escaped public life. Specific titles have not yet been verified, but the connection between Idyllwild and Dolly’s songwriting life appears genuine and substantial.
“King of the Whole Wide World” — Elvis Presley
In 1962, Elvis Presley came to Idyllwild for the filming of Kid Galahad. This is one of the most literal musical connections to the town: Elvis physically performed these songs while filming in and around Idyllwild. “King of the Whole Wide World” was the signature song and reinforced his growing moniker as “The King” Other songs include “This Is Living”, “I Got Lucky”, “Home Is Where the Heart Is” and “Riding the Rainbow”.
“Precious and Few”, “Time Won’t Let Me” — Nick D’Amico:
Longtime Idyllwild resident, singer, arranger, composer, producer and respected local musician, Nick D’Amico gives the hill a direct connection to these classics. Through D’Amico the connection to Idyllwild is personal.
Dick Halligan / Blood, Sweat & Tears:
Dick Halligan, founding member, arranger, composer, and keyboardist for Blood, Sweat & Tears, has longstanding ties to Idyllwild. He gives the town a strong connection to one of the defining jazz-rock groups of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
“Lisa, Listen to Me” and “Redemption” are especially significant because Halligan himself wrote them.
“He Shouldn’t-a, Oughtn’t-a Swang on Me” — Dorothy Provine
Dorothy Provine lived as a young girl in Idyllwild during the 1950s. She debuted on TV and quickly went to film. She has sung and danced with Donald O'Conner and Dean Martin. Her spirited performance of this song in the Blake Edwards movie "The Great Race" gives a memorable Hollywood-musical connection.
Idyllwild-Grown Artists:
Casey Abrams
Unlike the many artists who arrived in Idy later in life, Casey Abrams genuinely emerged from Idyllwild’s artistic ecosystem. An Idyllwild Arts alumnus and nationally known performer from American Idol, Abrams represents the town as a place where musicians are also formed.
The song “Simple Life” was the first song associated with Abrams’ rise as an artist.
Others include… “Great Bright Morning” and “Get Out”
Chris Thile:
Chris Thile’s connection to Idyllwild Arts places one of modern acoustic music’s most influential musicians into the town’s orbit. For Chris, Idyllwild served as an artistic incubator.
The song “Ode to a Butterfly” was perhaps the strongest representative example of the Thile/Idyllwild connection.
Musical Families and Lineages:
Diane Burt and the Alfred Burt Christmas Carol legacy:
Diane Burt leads The Caroling Company, a highly respected professional choral ensemble with many movie and television credits. They are known for their superb-quality live performances. Significantly, she is also the daughter of Alfred Burt, composer of the celebrated Alfred Burt Christmas Carols such as “Caroling, Caroling” and “Some Children See Him”, which have become enduring standards of American choral music.
Through Diane Burt’s residency and musical work in Idyllwild, the town has an important connection to Christmas music tradition.
She is also married to Nick D'Amico.
Rumors and Unverified Connections:
Bobby Womack:
was one of the great American soul artists—singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer whose career spanned gospel, R&B, soul, funk, and rock. Womack appears in notable Idyllwild resident lore, giving the hill a connection to one of soul music’s most distinctive voices. It’s not known if he wrote in Idyllwild.
Specific Dolly Parton songs:
While Dolly Parton’s songwriting activity in Idyllwild appears well supported, no specific major song has yet been definitively tied to the town. This remains one of the open questions in Idyllwild music lore.
Notable Mentions:

Dr. Marshall Hawkins
Jazz bassist, educator, and foundational Idyllwild Arts figure whose influence on the town’s musical culture is immense.

Barnaby Finch
Keyboardist, producer, and notable local musician connected to the broader Idyllwild creative community.

Paul Carman
Jazz saxophonist, former instructor at Idyllwild Arts and well known within the Idyllwild musical ecosystem.

Idyllwild Arts Alumni.
Over decades, Idyllwild Arts has produced and influenced a remarkable range of musicians, composers, performers, and educators. Many likely belong somewhere in this list, even if their specific songs have not yet been mapped.
Thanks for reading. If you have additions, changes and especially your personal experiences...PLEASE make a comment. Thanks.
