‘Tis the Season for Holiday Safety

Keep holiday safety in mind when putting up holiday decorations

The months of December and January are the most common times for home fires, deaths and injuries. Many of these fires are started by holiday lights, Christmas trees or unattended candles.

This information is being provided by the State Fire Marshal and Indiana Emergency Medical Services. Both are part of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Christmas Tree Safety

Most Hoosiers know to keep the Christmas tree base filled with water and to keep the tree away from heating sources. However, choosing the right tree can also help keep the holiday merry. Trees must be fresh when purchased and discarded when the needles dry and break easily when bent. Here are a few easy tips to make sure the holidays are safe:

· Make sure, when choosing and buying a live tree, that needles don’t fall off when touched;
· Before placing the live tree in the tree stand, cut 1-2” from the base of the trunk for better water intake;
· Make sure the tree is set up at least three feet away from any heat source. One in five Christmas tree fires is caused by a heating source that is too close;
· Make sure the tree does not block an exit;
· Add water to the tree stand daily; and
· Dispose of the live tree as soon as needles start significantly dropping. Dried-out trees are a significant fire hazard.

If the right Christmas tree is an artificial one, it still makes good sense to confirm that the manufacturer of the tree identifies it as being fire retardant.

Holiday Lights and Decorations

Pay extra attention to holiday decorations brought out just once a year. Every year before hanging lights inside, outside or on trees, they should be examined for possible safety hazards like frayed or broken strands and missing bulbs. There should never be more than three light strings attached together.

Verify that lights are rated for the particular location they’ll adorn, such as outdoor lights being used outside. And, when possible, older style lights should be replaced with newer, more cool-to-the-touch lights. Candles should never be used on a tree or in an unattended holiday display, and lights should always be turned off when leaving home or going to bed.

Decorating Safely

Safety tips don’t stop there. Hanging decorations or lights while on a ladder calls for caution as each year thousands of people make trips to the emergency room from falls due to unsafe ladder use. Here are a few ladder-related tips for holiday decorators:

· Stay clear of power or feeder lines when hanging lights outdoors;
· Always have a buddy system when up on a ladder or roof;
· Make sure the ladder is on secure and level footing before climbing;
· Space the base of the ladder one foot away from the wall for every four feet it reaches up;
· Never stand on the top two rungs of an extension ladder or the very top of a step ladder; and
· Carry a cell phone at all times in case of an accident.

Hoosiers Urged to Be “Ready: Whenever. Wherever.”
Public Service Campaign Encourages Reasonable Awareness and a Plan for Action in the Event of an Emergency

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is announcing its new campaign: “Ready: Whenever. Wherever.”

The “Ready: Whenever. Wherever.” campaign is a continuation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s “See Something, Say Something” campaign, which asks the public to be on the lookout for perpetrators of violent behavior and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The “Ready: Whenever. Wherever.” campaign recognizes that violent acts and dangerous events can occur anywhere, anytime — often with little to no warning. With increased security concerns at the local, state and national levels, IDHS is encouraging Hoosiers to be ready.

“Discussion, preparation and practice allows you and your family to stay calm in the event of an emergency, whether evacuation from a fire, or faced with threatening or violent behavior,” said John Erickson with the IDHS. “This campaign is meant to help empower Hoosiers to live without fear and continue attending events and activities according to their comfort level.”

The “Ready: Whenever. Wherever.” approach asks Hoosiers to pause and consider potential safety risks in their surroundings and to identify possible actions they could take to increase their personal safety in the event of an emergency. For example, Hoosiers should:

· Think about different scenarios that could be encountered in public settings.
· Consider what defensive actions would be appropriate for oneself and one’s family.
· Mentally or actively rehearse actions.
· Identify the emergency exits and safety barriers upon entering a building.
· Maintain awareness of other people and developing situations in the surrounding area.

“We each choose the best way to live our lives, and the safety of our loved ones is paramount,” Erickson said.

Indiana residents are encouraged to consider what “Ready: Whenever. Wherever.” looks like in their homes and communities by talking with family, friends and work colleagues.

WINTER STORM WARNING: The entire forecast area has been upgraded to a winter storm warning from 7pm Saturday Night through 4am Monday.

Between 7 and 11 inches of snow is expected with locally higher amounts over a foot possible. The map on the right demonstrates the uncertainty that still exists, although our confidence is increasing that everyone will see 8 or more inches of snow.

There is a slight chance for snow to change to rain for a brief period time in the far southern portion of our forecast area which accounts for the lower percentages there.

Indiana County Travel Status App Available for iPhone, Android

Before the snow arrives in Indiana, Hoosiers are encouraged to download the Indiana Travel Advisory app for their mobile devices. It’s a free mobile app to provide citizens with county travel status updates and alerts directly to their mobile devices.

The Indiana Office of Technology and Indiana Department of Homeland Security collaborated on the project. The Indiana Travel Advisory app is available to download for iPhone (https://appsto.re/us/QHVw4.i) in the App Store, and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gov.in.traveladvisory) in the Google Play Store.

Features include:

• Ability for users to set alerts for any county or counties they choose, up to every county in the state. When the travel status in a selected county is changed, the user will receive an alert notification.
• Weather conditions for each county. Tapping on a county will display the temperature and an icon with the current conditions.
• Contact information for county emergency management agencies, which are responsible for the status updates.
In addition to weather, the app will also include notifications with regard to flooding, hazardous materials spills and other events that could affect travel.

The app is meant to be used as part of a system to stay aware of changing travel conditions. Other sources include local news, travel, weather and social media sites and apps.
