The IANS Executive Committee was greatly saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Charles Till, who passed away this past Friday at his home in Idaho Falls.

A large number of current INL as well as retired INL and Argonne employee members of our section are well acquainted with Till’s immense contributions to nuclear science and technology through his leadership of the Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) program of Argonne National Laboratory. Developing upon the already very significant sodium fast reactor technology of EBR-II, the IFR program was very far ahead of its time. Current research at INL, Argonne and other DOE labs and private institutions continue to benefit from the work that Till led.

From the ongoing reactor projects by TerraPower, Oklo and other developers, to today’s High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium fuel efforts, fuel cycle and inherently safe reactor technology research, the IFR program has had tremendous influence. It’s not at all a stretch to say that today’s resurgence in interest in the potential of nuclear technology owes a great deal to Till’s team and their vision that stretched far beyond that of the politicians and bureaucrats of the time.

The Idaho Section of the American Nuclear Society helped kick off events throughout the area with our rapidly growing STEM at the Museum event. IANS members and other community organization set up many different science, technology, and engineering focused booths throughout the museum, and worked with public and charter schools in southeastern Idaho to schedule their visits. In all nearly a thousand students attended throughout the day on Oct. 12. We thank all of the organizations who helped support this great opportunity for southeastern Idaho students.

Congrats to these two!
