I cannot stay silent on this.
Last week, a popular YouTuber and his wife went public about their decision to abort their baby at five months after receiving a diagnosis of Trisomy 21, more commonly known as Down syndrome.
The father reportedly referred to the baby as having a “glitch.” Down syndrome is not a glitch.
Thirteen years ago, when I learned my daughter had Down syndrome, I was scared. I was sad. I was uncertain about what our future would look like. I knew very little about Down syndrome, and that experience became the beginning of my mission: to advocate for those who are too often overlooked, to promote acceptance, and to help others see the abilities, value, and beauty of people with Down syndrome.
It breaks my heart to think that these parents may not have received balanced and accurate information about Down syndrome. It breaks my heart that they may not have known there is a community of families willing and eager to adopt a child with Down syndrome. And it breaks my heart that they will never experience the unique joy, love, and light that a child with Down syndrome can bring into a family.
My daughter, BrynnLe, has enriched my life in ways I cannot fully put into words. She has taught me patience, compassion, resilience, and unconditional love. She is not defined by a diagnosis, and neither is anyone else with Down syndrome.
Today, my heart is heavy for what could have been. But I will continue to use my voice to advocate, educate, and remind the world that every life has value, every person has worth, and Down syndrome is not something to fear—it is part of what makes someone uniquely and wonderfully who they are.
