SRTA recently met with the U.S. Forest Service - Caribou-Targhee National Forest to discuss several exciting opportunities for our local trail community.

One topic was a potential Class 1 pedal-assist E-bike pilot program on designated Kelly Canyon mountain bike trails. Palisades District Ranger Trinity Bu**er shared that the Forest Service is exploring this option and would like to hear from local user groups as the process moves forward. The Forest Service may seek input and support from trail users and organizations in the future.

We also discussed a winter fat bike pilot project on Kelly Mountain Spur Trail ( #881) and the new Y-Knot Trail to create a groomed loop opportunity. The Forest Service emphasized that existing cross-country ski trails would remain unchanged. This project would also give fat bikers access to the Kelly Mountain Warming Hut, with the opportunity to make overnight reservations through the SRTA website.

SRTA appreciates the ongoing collaboration with Forest Service. We'll continue to share updates as these opportunities develop and encourage everyone to stay engaged in the conversation about the future of our trails.

Challis Trails Day Festival – September 26, 2026 – 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM – CCTA again will be hosting multiple running and mountain biking fun races for different levels of ability in celebration of the Challis Foothills trails. There will be a prize raffle as well. Please come and support our local trails!

A great opportunity to help improving the trails! Thank you U.S. Forest Service - Caribou-Targhee National Forest

🚴‍♀️ The Palisades Ranger District has been hard at work in the Kelly Canyon area, and we’re excited to share an update and an invitation!

Over the past few weeks, crews completed the rough-in of the brand new Y Knot Trail ( #318). This trail will connect Buckhorn Spring to the McCarthy and Riverview trails near the Kelly Mountain winter warming hut, creating an awesome new loop for riders exploring the area.

We’ve moved into the finish work phase, shaping the tread and dialing in the final details. There’s still more to do, and we’d love your help!
