Kelly Canyon Area Backcountry Use Now Open

Enough snow has finally arrived so on Friday January 16th volunteers with the Snake River Trails Alliance setup both the Morgan Summit and Kelly Mountain Warming huts above the Kelly Canyon Ski area on forest service land. The trails were groomed and the winter ski signage put out. The snow was surprisingly nice and fluffy with about 2 feet accumulation. It’s all set waiting for you cross country skiers and/or snowshoers to enjoy. For more information on the area or to reserve a night’s stay in the Kelly Mountain warming hut please visit: SnakeRiverTrailsAlliance.com.

After 72 years of service to our local winter community the Idaho Falls Ski Club is no longer. We were all heartbroken to hear they were to go away but were so honored to have been asked to carry the torch and continue with trail maintenance and hut program. Please take the time to help us continue what they started.

Do you use the Kelly Canyon area warming huts and trails during your winter adventures? There is a dedicated group of wonderful volunteers who have been installing and maintaining these huts for over 30 years! The current "old reliable" snowmachine the volunteers are using has seen better days and needs a rest. To fund a new snowmachine, we, your local Snake River Trails Alliance is applying for a $25000 grant from the Idaho Department of Parks & Recreation via their Recreation Trails Program (RTP). Part of the qualification requirements for the grant is to show community support for the project funding. As an alliance of multiusers in the Eastern Idaho community, we want to see the warming hut program continue as a benefit to all users.

A reminder that recreation access to IDL land is a privilege. Those that directly pay for permits/usage take priority. IDL has a mandate to raise endowment funds.
We have some great IDL reps here locally that are working hard to expand trails for recreation and we are lucky. Cranky Cowboy, Bitting Goat, and several other projects are because of the collaboration recreationist have had with IDL. The Idaho schools are the biggest beneficiary of their work. Keep an eye out for projects up near Salmon this next year. Some already underway.

Today, Idaho public schools received a record-setting $68,224,800 distribution for the current school year. These funds are generated by endowment lands and endowment investments managed by the Idaho Department of Lands Land Board.

The event featured Christmas songs from the elite singing group, the Capital Choirs from Capital High School - Boise. Their performance has become a tradition in the rotunda.
