You may wonder what the Janice Roberts Memorial Park is all about. Let me give you a little background. Director/Coach Charlie Walker has been involved in Little League Football, Middle School Basketball and held camps in this community for years. Coach Walker has a love for sports, youth, and his community. Recently, Coach Walker was involved in a basketball camp at River View High School and was
amazed at the youth that came out simply because it was something for them to do in our community. Sadly our community has not had any updates in recent years and everything continues to decline. We have no parks or places for the community to gather or for our young people to come after school and during the summer to play and hang out. It saddens us when we hear on the national news that McDowell County has the highest death rate and highest national average for obesity. WE have to make a change! Yes, McDowell County has a lot of issues but we also have a lot of hard working, decent people that live here too! Coach Walker has a vision to start the CHANGE! A piece of property that sits in the downtown part of Iaeger that Coach Walker was given by his stepfather after his mother passed in 2001 and the home place has since burned down and remains a bare lot. This will be the location for the park that will be in honor of his beloved mother Janice Roberts. In addition to the full size basketball court, the park will host other areas for families such as picnic tables, benches, flower boxes, and swings. Coach Walker, simply put, wants to give back to the community he loves! We ask that each of you dig deep into your heart and find a way to help in any way that you can! Remember this is a non-profit organization and everything will go to the park. We look forward to seeing you there in the near future!
