As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, we recognize Lucy Hicks Anderson not only for the hardships she faced, but how she lived her life with joy, generosity and courage. 🏳️‍⚧️

Born in Kentucky in 1886, Lucy knew from a young age that she was a girl. At a time when the word “transgender” didn’t exist, her parents listened to a doctor’s advice and raised her as the daughter she knew herself to be. As an adult, she became a beloved chef, baker and hostess in Oxnard, California, known for her parties and her generosity to her community.

When her identity was challenged in court in the 1940s, she stood firm, saying, “I defy any doctor in the world to prove that I am not a woman.”

Lucy’s story is a reminder of what it looks like when families support their children, and when people live proudly as themselves. Today, we honor Lucy for both her pioneering work in trans rights and marriage equality.

Every now and then we see the meme or comment — “If your parents won’t accept you, I’m your mom now.”

While there’s often only good intentions behind that phrase, that’s not how we see it.

We’re not your mom. We’re not your dad. We’re not here to take their place.

We’re here because you deserve love while you wait and hope for the people who should be in your corner to come around.

And if they never do, know there are more than 50,000 chosen family members across the country ready with hugs, warm words and support for you.

Bisexuality isn't a 50/50 split or a "still figuring it out" phase. It's attraction that isn't limited to one gender, and it looks different for every bi person. Someone's bisexuality doesn't shift depending on who they're dating or who they like.

This Bisexual Awareness Month, let's retire the myths and celebrate the truth: bi people have always been here, whole and valid, exactly as they are.

To every bisexual person in our lives — thank you for your love, your honesty, and your whole, valid self. We're lucky to be loved by you.
