🎉🌿 On July 1, we celebrated the closing ceremony of the 2026 ecoLatinos Youth Environmental Summer Camp!

Our students proudly shared their learning through creative posters and received certificates celebrating their hard work and dedication. It was a joyful day filled with pride, gratitude, new friendships, and unforgettable memories. 💚🌎

This experience was made possible thanks to the incredible support of the University of Maryland Sea Grant, Prince George’s County Council Member Jolene Ivey, the American Federation of Teachers for their backpack and book donations, and all our partners, host sites, and guest speakers. Thank you for helping inspire the next generation of environmental leaders! ✨

🐢 On June 30, 2026, students arrived at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) excited and ready to learn! Students explored the Chesapeake Bay by wading into the water and learned how scientists monitor ecosystem health and biodiversity, the vital role of oysters and living reefs, and how river otters help researchers identify polluted waterways.

A special thank you to the University of Maryland Sea Grant, for making this incredible experience possible through their generous funding support. We are also deeply grateful to the staff at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) for creating such an engaging, hands-on learning experience that inspired our students to explore and appreciate our natural resources and our ecosystem. 🌿💙

♻️🌱 Our students explored the Prince George's (PG) County Compost and Recycling Facilities, where they discovered how food waste is transformed into nutrient-rich compost, learned how recycling materials are sorted and processed, and explored the impacts of litter and microplastics on wildlife, ecosystems, and human health.

The most rewarding part? Hearing students share how these experiences sparked an interest in pursuing environmental careers. 💚🌎

Thank you to the Prince George's County Compost and Recycling Facilities for hosting our students and teaching them how recycling and composting help protect our environment. Your hands-on lessons inspired our youth to become the next generation of environmental stewards! 🌱♻️

♻️🌱 Nuestros estudiantes visitaron las instalaciones de Compostaje y Reciclaje del Condado de Prince George's (PG), donde descubrieron cómo los residuos de alimentos se transforman en composta rica en nutrientes, aprendieron cómo se clasifican y procesan los materiales reciclables, y exploraron el impacto de la basura y los microplásticos en la vida silvestre, los ecosistemas y la salud humana.

🎣🌿 Adventure at the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary! Our 2026 ecoLatinos Youth Environmental Summer Camp students embraced the great outdoors by climbing an observation tower, enjoying a hayride and boat ride, and learning how to fish.

The highlight? Watching so many students catch their very first fish! 🎉 The excitement, laughter, and proud smiles made it an unforgettable day.
Every adventure inspires the next generation of environmental leaders by building confidence, connecting with nature, and creating lifelong memories. 💚🌎

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary staff for their time, support, and dedication to our students. Thank you for teaching them how to fish and for sharing your experiences and environmental career pathways, inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders.

🐠On June 25, 2026, Youth Environmental Summer Camp students enjoyed their third field trip at Sandy Point State Park ⛱! They met with researchers and conservation professionals, explored local plants, berries and wildlife on a guided nature walk, and wrapped up the day at the beach while learning the importance of protecting our waterways and keeping our parks clean.

🐠El 25 de junio de 2026, los estudiantes del Campamento de Verano Ambiental para Jóvenes disfrutaron de su tercera excursión al Parque Estatal Sandy Point ⛱. Conocieron a investigadores y profesionales de la conservación, exploraron plantas, frutos del bosque y la fauna local durante una caminata guiada por la naturaleza, y finalizaron el día en la playa, donde aprendieron la importancia de proteger nuestras vías fluviales y mantener limpios nuestros parques.

🔍On June 24, 2026, Youth Environmental Summer Camp students visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. At the Q?rius Center, they explored fossils, artifacts, and preserved specimens while learning from scientists about their career journeys and future fellowship and internship opportunities. Students also enjoyed exploring the museum's exhibits and discovering the wonders of natural history. 🔍🗿🐘🐋🔬

On June 23, 2026, the ecoLatinos Youth Environmental Summer Camp students explored and learned about the rich history of the Anacostia River at the Bladensburg Waterfront. 🌿🚤

Thanks to the Anacostia Watershed Society, students learned how to identify native plants and wildlife, they removed invasive species, and enjoyed a boat tour while learning about wetlands, water quality, and protecting healthy ecosystems .

Through hands-on experiences like these, our students are becoming the next generation of environmental stewards and community leaders. 🌎💚

El 23 de junio de 2026, los estudiantes del Campamento de Verano del Programa Ambiental para Jóvenes de ecoLatinos exploraron y aprendieron sobre la rica historia del río Anacostia en el Bladensburg Waterfront. 🌿🚤

Gracias a la Anacostia Watershed Society, los estudiantes aprendieron a identificar plantas y vida silvestre nativas, ayudaron a remover especies invasoras y disfrutaron de un recorrido en bote mientras aprendían sobre la importancia de los humedales, la calidad del agua y la protección de ecosistemas saludables.

A través de experiencias prácticas como esta, nuestros estudiantes se están convirtiendo en la próxima generación de líderes ambientales y guardianes del medio ambiente. 🌎💚

On June 22, 2026, ecoLatinos officially kicked off our 3rd Annual Youth Environmental Summer Camp Program with an orientation for participating high school students and their parents!

This summer, students from Montgomery and Prince George's Counties explored green careers, learned about environmental conservation, and visited sites across the DMV through hands-on experiences.

This would not have been possible without the support from the University of Maryland Sea Grant, the Prince George’s County Council Member- Jolene Ivy and the backpack 🎒and book📚donations from the American Federation of Teachers.

Together, we're inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders and advocates for a more sustainable future. 🌎🌱
