Leadership is the art of bringing people together with respect and understanding. It's not about being the boss of your peers, but creating a space where everyone shines and feels like they belong. It's about being a good listener and helping everyone feel important in whatever you are doing, whether it’s academically, athletically, etc.. A leader supports the team and encourages everyone to do their best. That’s what leadership means to me. – Jayden Hernandez

“Leadership to me, means standing tall in the face of adversity and embracing the responsibility to inspire positive change within my community. It's about using my voice to amplify the concerns and experiences of those who may not always be heard. Leadership, to me, is rooted in the understanding of the struggles that my community faces and taking proactive steps to address them. Being a leader means fostering inclusivity and unity, recognizing the strength that comes from diversity. It involves breaking down stereotypes and challenging systemic barriers that may limit opportunities for people who look like me.

Being the captain of my high school track team has given me a profound understanding of how leadership intertwines with the sport and the dynamics of our team. Leadership, in this context, is not just about being the fastest runner or the most skilled athlete; it's about guiding and inspiring my teammates to collectively achieve our goals. As the vice president of the junior class, I strive to embody the values of dedication, discipline, and resilience, both in the classroom and in my interactions with the school community. I see leadership as a journey of self-discovery and continuous growth, where I learn from the experiences of those who came before me and use that knowledge to pave the path for those who will follow.” – Carson Edwards

“Leadership is not about dictating to others what should be done and how, but more so about meeting the needs of those in subjection, garnering their support, and guiding them into a better position within themselves and society.

As the President of the 4-H Mad Scientists Club, Senior Patrol Leader for BSA Troop 1237, CEO for Junior Achievement Company Teams, a teen liaison for Victory Christian Ministries International-Suitland Children's Ministry, and most importantly as an older brother, I have had several opportunities to operate in the position as a servant leader. In each of my positions, I have effectively directed, advised, and assisted those under me to achieve their goals and acquire their own success. By leading in this manner, I inspire and encourage others to lead and always push forward towards their own goals and vision.

Being a servant leader really helps me grow in empathy towards others and enables me to get things done—not by ordering people around, but by understanding who they are and how their unique skill could be leveraged for the group's overall success.” – Micah Smith

“To me, leadership is the role that sets the foundation for my work ethic and how I approach tasks. I try to be a leader who gets things done at the best time possible and learn from my mistakes and improve on the next thing. This applies to everything I do; for example, in lacrosse, when I make a mistake, I take a mental note and discuss it with my coach on the sideline to understand what I need to improve.

During a group presentation, I had to take on a leading role and speak for most of the time. I made some mistakes during the presentation, but afterward, I reflected on how to avoid similar errors in the future. Additionally, I encouraged everyone else in my group to speak, and reassured them that messing up was okay.

I listen to people when they come to me with an issue, and I create an environment where they feel free to share information without fear of interruption or criticism. I give them feedback based on how I think they will take it, and I talk with them to see if I can help them fix the problem or if this is something they must do on their own.”

"Leadership, to me, is the ability to inspire and guide others towards a shared vision or goal. It involves taking initiative, making sound decisions, and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Leadership is not confined to positions of authority; it can be displayed in various settings, from personal relationships to professional contexts.

One example of leadership is leading by example. A true leader sets a positive precedent through their actions and behaviors. Another aspect of leadership is effective communication. A leader must be able to articulate their vision clearly and concisely, ensuring that everyone understands the direction and purpose.

Furthermore, leadership involves empowering others. A leader recognizes and cultivates the strengths of their team members, providing guidance, support, and opportunities for growth. Leadership also entails resilience and adaptability. In the face of challenges or setbacks, a leader remains composed, learns from failures, and inspires others to persevere."

“To me, leadership is the glue that holds everything and everyone together. A leader is someone who tells everyone what to do and what part they play in doing it without sounding authoritative. A leader is someone who wants the team to win and not just himself. The leader encourages and pushes everyone to do their best, no matter the outcome.

An example of a leader is Harriet Tubman and how she led the former slaves to freedom and encouraged them to keep going and have hope too. Another example of leadership is Malcolm X and how he stood for the civil rights movement, urging his fellow Black African Americans to protect themselves against white aggression 'by any means necessary.' Mr. Kelly shows leadership by founding the 13th Man to provide and show young African American males the right way and what it takes to succeed.” – Jaden Lee

Leadership means knowing when to take control and understanding when the people around you need guidance. Leadership also involves making difficult decisions in support of the greater good and is often about being a bridge builder, bringing opposite sides together.

An example of effective leadership that many don't recognize is when Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam. This is an example of effective leadership because:

1. He demonstrated courage by publicly changing his views about race.
2. He spoke against the Nation of Islam.
3. He tried to build bridges between different races.

“To me, leadership is more than just a word. To be a leader, it is not enough to simply be the best or the first in a certain field. It is not enough to have the loudest voice and be heard. It is not enough to be right all the time. Although each of these traits listed would definitely be helpful and beneficial for a leader to have or develop, you can't rely on them only to make you a leader.

As a leader, I believe you should have the ability to motivate others to act but also gain respect from them. You should be able to take into consideration every one of your team members and incorporate their interests in every decision, activity, and event that occurs. A leader is someone who can read a room, analyze it, and come to the best possible conclusions on how to interact with or engage the group.

A leader should also be open to being led in the areas that they may not be experts in. When a leader is open to constructive criticism and guidance, they influence those being led to do the same. To be open to learning from others, a leader should also be vulnerable and be able to request help when needed. All in all, being a leader entails many different qualities - both personal skills and interactions with others.” – Ethan Amatie

"To me, leadership means using your strengths to guide others. Academically, I've been on the honor roll/principal's list for all of last year. Instead of gatekeeping my knowledge, I share my intelligence with others. For example, I encourage and push others to think of innovative ideas, as I do, which benefits academic performance and helps me become the image of the leader I strive to be.

Socially, I support and lead the youth in my community by being a voice and helping them with the same problems that I used to have socially. I employ the same skills and leadership attributes in my Boy Scout troop. For example, if one of the youths is communicating with his head down, I tell him to raise his head and always look at someone you're talking to in the eye.

I have been directly and indirectly teaching the youth what leadership is all about to me. With my friends, I'm a leader by bringing athleticism, academics, and a balance of that to the friendship. Evidence of this is encouraging friends and schoolmates to attend teacher office hours for extra help and that it shouldn't be embarrassing. Athletically, I have incorporated leadership skills by encouraging everyone to be active in some way. As a result, some go to the gym, some go to martial arts, and some play sports." - Eli Williams

"Leadership means being able to influence others in a positive and productive way, where the outcome is the achievement of a goal. An example of my leadership is my role in the Ministers of Hospitality (Junior Ushers) ministry, of which I have been a member and officer for quite some time. Some junior members don't know the proper stance, signs, and other key components of the Usher role. As a member who takes pride in what I do, I took the initiative to start having the youth members go over what is needed to be done as an usher after the service.

The senior usher, who is our leader, decided to appoint me as the Lead Usher based on my commitment, dedication, and knowledge of the correct way to be an usher. After a few extra training sessions, our usher board became the sharpest and best-detailed usher ministry in our vicinity." - Darnell Gilliam. "To be a leader is to exhibit confidence in your own skin. For instance, if all your comrades were participating in an activity that could potentially affect your future, a leader would choose to try to talk their friend out of the situation to avoid danger. Becoming a leader can be challenging, depending on the person's mindset. A leader’s mindset must encompass constant affirmations, self-confidence, and fearlessness. In my opinion, leaders are individuals who change the world." - Bryce Pringle. Be sure to like and follow our page to stay up to date with The 13th Man Leadership Academy.

"Leadership is about creating an environment where everyone has an opportunity, where everyone's voice is heard, and where hard work leads to success. Leadership, to me, is about self-improvement, learning from experiences, and striving to bring out the best in my peers and myself." ~Alexander James, Bowie High School
