Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound

Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound The Alliance is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the permanent preservation of Nantucket Sound. More info at www.saveoursound.org

The mission of the Alliance is to permanently protect by designating it as a National Historic Landmark. The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound (also known as Save Our Sound) is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to securing permanent protection for Nantucket Sound, the historic body of water that lies between Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. The Alliance

was formed as a grassroots organization in 2002 in response to Cape Wind's proposal to build an industrial wind project in the Sound. The goal of the Alliance is to protect the Sound's rich ecology and to safeguard it against future inappropriate development. The Alliance also promotes the Sound’s unique environmental, historic, and economic values through educational initiatives. Our supporters include municipalities, tribal groups. chambers of commerce, historic preservation organizations, environmental groups, fishing and boating entities, public officials, and countless individuals across the Cape and Islands. NEXT WEEK! Just in time for summer on the Cape and Islands, this is a chance to deepen your connection to a place so many of us love—one shell at a time.

Register at: https://tinyurl.com/SOS-Seashells

On June 4, join us for a special ACONS (A Celebration of Nantucket Sound) webinar, "Coastal Treasures: Seashells and the Stories They Tell" with shellfish biologist and author Sandy Macfarlane.

Sandy brings more than four decades of experience studying and protecting coastal ecosystems, along with a lifetime of curiosity about the shells scattered along our beaches. From the bold and beautiful to the small and easily overlooked, she’ll reveal how each shell tells a story—about marine life, coastal environments, and even our own connection to the sea.

We'll discover:
- What different shells can tell you about the health of Nantucket Sound

- How shells form, change, and travel along our shores

- Surprising stories from Sandy’s career in coastal conservation

- Why these small “treasures” matter more than you think

By the end, you won’t look at a beach walk the same way again.

ICYMI - last week, our ACONS webinar featured Dr. Sarah Bois (the Linda Loring Nature Foundation), who delivered a fascinating presentation on "Wildflowers and Wildlife: Sandplain Grasslands and Heathlands of Cape Cod & Nantucket."

Sarah shared a wealth of stunning visuals in a dynamic presentation that drew an engaged audience. She took attendees on a deep dive into the rare and remarkable world of maritime sandplain grasslands—globally imperiled ecosystems that support a rich diversity of plant and animal life. She also explored how coastal forces like wind and salt spray shape these unique habitats, and highlighted the important work being done to protect them for future generations.

If you love the natural beauty of the Cape and Islands, you'll definitely want to watch this recording!

TONIGHT! We are hosting a special ACONS ("A Celebration of Nantucket Sound") webinar (6-7pm) exploring one of the Cape and Islands’ most beautiful and unique natural landscapes: "Wildflowers and Wildlife: Sandplain Grasslands and Heathlands."
Register for free at: https://tinyurl.com/SOS-Flora

Dr. Sarah Bois, Director of Research and Conservation at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation on Nantucket, will guide us through the remarkable ecology of Nantucket’s coastal habitats and the rare sandplain grasslands and heathlands that make our region so special. These globally uncommon landscapes are shaped by wind, salt spray, and sandy soils — and support an incredible diversity of wildflowers, wildlife, and coastal plant communities.

Sarah will explore the ecology of Nantucket’s coastal environments, from windswept grasslands and heathlands to dune fields, coastal banks, and nearby wetlands.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from one of the region’s leading conservation scientists and to see our coastal landscapes through a whole new lens — just as spring is (hopefully) about to begin across the Cape and Islands.
