It must be almost summer! She’s back!

Cliodna (pronounced Clean-ah, like we want our world to be) already had her photo taken by someone for the first time this season, while we were installing her today. She was happy to be in the sunshine after a long winter. She was happier to be in the limelight. She was also happy when I gave her a little kiss hello.

Hopefully she succeeds at her task of reminding everyone who visits her to be good stewards of our beautiful Cape and to be fair, our beautiful planet as she begins her third season today.

If you visit her, please tag me, or send me a photo!

Happy almost summer. May people remember how important it is to protect what we have, while we still have it.

Cliodna is made with a lot of things rescued from the landfill and a bunch of things found on the beach.

Extinction is forever.
Rice’s whales, Balaenoptera ricei, are the rarest whales in the world with only about 100 remaining. They live in the Gulf of Mexico, the only species of baleen whale that does.

They’ve only recently been confirmed as a unique species - in 2021. They are about 41 feet long and weigh up to 60,000 pounds.

Threats include vessel strikes, ocean noise, climate change, oil spills, marine debris, entanglement and bad environmental policies (which will exacerbate all of these issues) put in place by the current government of America which will all but take away any chance of survival the whales may have had.

Threatened Manatees and endangered sea turtles also face increased risk due to the policies which allow oil and gas drilling in areas protected for said endangered species under American law. But the law is for sale these days, and I guess the Rice’s whales weren’t the highest bidders.

I have never seen one of these magnificent creatures, but I still wish for their survival against the horrific odds.

On this Endangered species day, take a moment to celebrate all of the amazing creatures we share this planet with, support those that are endangered if you’re able. Through donating to organizations like that works to protect the endangered North Atlantic Right Whales; or by volunteering for an organization that supports creatures you are passionate about or by educating people about why the world is better if we share it.

We are part of nature, not separate from it. A loss of any species will create unknown ripples that will affect us all.

Please walk gently on the planet. And vote. Vote for the planet, democracy, kindness, human decency, every chance you get. We are all quite literally running out of time.

Edited to add, we found her! 💙🌊🐋

What were you doing in 1987?

I often used to throw it out to the Universe that I’d like to find a message in a bottle. I did find one a few years back, gorgeous, tiny, glass bottle - the only part of the message I could read was ‘be kind’ so that brought me enormous amounts of joy.

On Earth day we were heading back, my bucket, backpack and hands were full, but there was this bottle just lying on top of the sand- I’ll pop it in someone else’s bucket I decided as I bent over to pick it up carefully trying not to drop anything I was balancing. Hmm, looks like it could have a message in it, I thought, assuming it was just a bit of trash or something that had been stuck in there.

But no, a message. In a (plastic) bottle. From 1987! It had only made it about 100 feet, haha. Must have been trapped somewhere under the jetty and knocked loose really recently because both the bottle and paper were in decent shape. It appeared just in time for me to find. 😍

Now we’re on the hunt for Lisa Marie Martin who went to Provincetown Elementary in 1987, anyone know her? lol.

Such a fun find!! A gift from the Universe.

Of course my pleas to the Universe now are all about bringing back kindness, and imploring sane and nice people to vote, and less about finding dinosaurs or messages. (Though I’ll never pass them up, and they will always make me smile. Okay, in my heart of hearts, there may still be a tiny please may I find… that still gets thrown up into the world occasionally).

Please vote for this beautiful planet, for humanity, for equality, for democracy every chance you get. Vote local. Your vote really does matter.

And if you have to toss a message into the ocean, find yourself a glass bottle.

Earth day every day doesn’t mean I didn’t still get together with 40 of my closest friends yesterday anyway. And by 40, well, actually, I didn’t know most of them which is really weird for this annual clean up. Haha. But the few I know, I am ridiculously fond of and grateful for.

We cleaned a lot of area. Removed a ton of debris. Laughed a lot. Bled a little. I didn’t take any inspiring photos at all, but there you go. A great day.

WWJD?

Would he walk on water to clean up all the balloons in his name killing marine species?

Would he part the sea to collect all of the debris lying on the sea floor entangling sea turtles and whales and other magnificent beings?

Would he lay his hands on the soon to be extinct Rice’s whales to save them, while they are being told their very existence is not as important as money by a government that says it’s acting in his name?

Would he talk about the fact that there is soon to be more plastic than fish in the ocean as he miraculously made 2 fish feed 5000 people?

What in the world would he do? Asking for a friend.

Of the 80 balloons I counted from our clean up the other day, about 30 of them were from multiple bunches stating ‘Jesus is the Reason for the Season’.

I am at a complete loss how we have got here.

And, lest there be any question at all, this post is in no way shape or form anti-Jesus. It is, however, well and truly, completely, unapologetically anti-hypocrite.

If you celebrate, happy Easter; he is the reason for this season too. Or, happy Passover, happy spring, happy weekend, happy earth month… Whatever you celebrate, you probably don’t need a balloon to celebrate. And by probably, I mean you don’t.
