Meet Anjali! She is a kind and helpful soul who, in her free time, finds joy in singing, dancing, and lending a hand to her mother in the kitchen. She dares to dream big, aspiring to become a singer one day! Her favorite subjects in school are English and social studies. She loves coming to the center to surround herself with friends and to learn new things. This coming year, she hopes to explore the wonders of the zoo or an amusement park. Anjali's spirit remains unbroken, living with her mother, father, and two brothers in a small one-room home in the slums, where her father works hard in a lead factory, and her mother works as a household maid.

In India, 10th grade students have to pass intense national exams that go on for several weeks and cover many different subjects. We are proud to announce that all 16 of our students passed their exams and did very well! Congrats!!

During the next couple days, people in Kolkata and the state of West Bengal will be voting in one of the most intense elections there ever. Over 250,000 army/police have been deployed this past week by the central government. Schools and many other places are shut down and any transport with 2 wheels has been prohibited. Please say a prayer for peace during this time and a just election.
In India, to make sure people can’t vote twice, a person’s finger/fingernail is marked with permanent ink.

Meet Noor! She is a very quiet and shy young girl who rarely talks. She likes playing with toy balls and playing games with her siblings. She is in kindergarten where she is learning to write. Noor lives with her parents, seven siblings, and grandmother. Her father works in a flip-flop factory and is often unable to work due to addiction. Her mother cuts flip-flop parts at home to earn a very small amount of money. She and Noor's grandmother both have thyroid problems. Only three of the children in Noor's family attend school due to the cost. The family lives in two small rooms for 11 people with no kitchen or running water. They live in extreme poverty.

Aliza lives with her father, mother, and young sister. Her father works in a flip-flop shop and earns a very meager living. Her mother is a homemaker. The family is very poor and cooks on a mud stove. They live in the slums of Kolkata in a one-room home with no kitchen or indoor plumbing.

Drum roll, please!
We promised to report how Kohinoor is doing with her business, and all we can say is WOW!!
In her first month, she made 29,000 Rupees which is just short of ten times what she made cleaning houses previously (3,000 per month)!
She has three daughters and became a widow eight years ago when her husband died from alcohol addiction complications. She is thrilled to be able to give her daughters a much better life (and they can also stop working—cutting flip flop pieces for many hours a day for under a dollar a day).
