We are giving dictionaries to all 3rd graders at Hurricane, Three Falls, Valley Academy, LaVerkin, and Springdale Elementaries again this year. This Wednesday at 6pm, we will be sorting them into boxes for distribution and stamping them with our club name and the Rotary 4-Way Test. You're welcome to join us in Room 102 of the Hurricane Community Center. If you're also interested, you can help us present them to the students in the coming weeks. Hurricane Valley Rotary Club presented to Hurricane High School a $1,000 check on September 1 to support the school's Teen Center. The center offers a wide range of support to all students at the school. It ranges from food, clothing, hygiene supplies, a washer/dryer, shower, and more. We had a wonderful talk about Bridge Utah Food Co-Op from Terra Hull today. Her family has been running the operation since 2018. The co-op receives supplies from several grocers in the area and provides a central service point for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. They generally serve 500-700 customers each week, although the most recent weekly count was 951!
Our club presented Terra with a $2,000 donation for the co-op. We recently did some volunteer work there, and we pledged to do more in the future.
The Bridge Utah Food Co-Op is open Friday-Tuesday from noon to 5pm. If you want to volunteer or donate, visit the co-op at 81 N 100 E in Hurricane. They are always in need of grocery bags and egg cartons, too.

We recently went to the Bridge Utah Food Pantry in Hurricane to help clean and restock the shelves. Terra Hull from the pantry will talk to us about the pantry at our Tuesday, August 25 noon meeting in Room 107 of the Hurricane Community Center. Rotary International has authorized a fundraiser to support relief efforts in Venezuela. The RI Foundation has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator for 17 consecutive years. Additionally, Rotary has approved two Disaster Response Grants, one for each of the two Rotary Districts in Venezuela. You may donate to the fundraiser using the QR code. Wow! At our Rotary Club meeting on Tuesday, we heard from Sarah Hall of the Hurricane Branch Library. She told us all about the summer reading program at the library and how it can help kids and parents deal with the "summer reading slump." Don't let your kids fall behind. The Hurricane Branch has the best participation in the county. Children learn, create, and discover while enjoying the activities, reading, and visits from places like the St. George Dinosaur Discover, Liberty Village, and others.

Jeepers! We're so wonderfully busy this spring, it's hard to keep up!
On May 12, we presented six $500 scholarships to graduating seniors at Hurricane High School. Hurricane Valley Rotary awards these scholarships every year. A few of the awardees are pictured in this post with Rotary Scholarship Coordinator Jackie Susnik and President-Elect Bruce Cole.
They are open to anyone, but we primarily look at students who were active in the school's Interact Club, the Junior ROTC, and Scouting. Interact is the high school level of Rotary. Students focus on how to serve others in the community and develop teamwork and leadership skills.
Application forms for the Hurricane Valley Rotary scholarships will be available sometime in March. Interested students will benefit from being part of the Interact Club at HHS and make themselves more competitive for the Rotary scholarship.
