August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. It is the world’s largest campaign to end overdose as well as the stigma. This is a day that we will pause to honor the lives lost to overdose and reflect with those who are grieving. For more information you can visit https://www.overdoseday.com/
From 2012-2021 Beadle County has lost 14 lives due to unintentional and undetermined overdoses many of them were methamphetamine. Today, Community Counseling Services will be displaying 14 empty shoes for those we have lost. Be sure to drive by 357 Kansas Ave SE to see this display. Remember we are not only honoring the lives that were lost but also those they left behind.
A closer look at Methamphetamine Overdose:
The misuse of methamphetamine (potent and highly addictive stimulant) - is still a serious problem in the United States. Some areas it exceeds the threat of opioid overdose. Methamphetamine overdose can be either acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term).
• Acute methamphetamine overdose- drug is taken by accident or on purpose and the side affects that occur as a result could be life threatening.
• Chronic methamphetamine overdose- health effects that occurs when the drug is used overtime.
