At that time, the Mayor of Hurley along with a few area business men decided that there needed to be a place that could assist children and adults with disabilities in gaining skills to become employed. The founders started providing vocational services in a small home in Hurley. Initially, the staff provided services for 3 young adults with developmental disabilities. As word spread and referrals
increased, the small house had become too small. Services were moved to the old Erspamer’s grocery store in 1967 to accommodate the increase in referrals. At that time we became known as the “Look-Up Workshop” and began providing services to people throughout Iron County. In addition to providing services to individuals with disabilities, the late 1960’s also brought in local miners who had been injured on the job and needed rehabilitative training to find new jobs. Look-Up’s first community job placement was for a former miner who had been unemployed for 5 years due to arthritis. With assistance from Look-Up staff, he was trained and employed as a lino-type operator at the Iron County Miner in 1968. In 1971, a day development center was added to our array of services. Jobs offered at Look-Up back in the 70’s included car washing and furniture refurbishing, both services that are still asked about today. In 1977, Look-Up Workshop purchased the Maple Leaf Motel and operated it as both a motel and residential group home for 8 individuals. The motel closed in 1978 but the residential home remains today, providing residence for 5 individuals. In 1984, the founders decided it was time for a new building and a new name. The building process took two years, with the completion and move happening in 1986. With the move came a new name: Highline Corporation. Throughout the years, Highline Corporation has employed and assisted hundreds of individuals with varying disabilities in enhancing vocational and independent living skills in order to achieve the goals that they have for their lives.
