We would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting us at the annual fireworks show. The Hurley Fire Auxiliary and the Hurley Fire Protection District in cooperation with HCDC enjoys putting on this event each year for our community. We look forward to seeing you next year.
Sometimes it’s easier to not do the thing. Not plan the event. Not participate in the community cause.
I’m sure it would’ve been easier for the folks in Hurley, Missouri, to skip their annual fireworks display last night. Hurley, in rural Stone County, has about 176 people.
I imagine it took significant work to plan the event, let alone raise the money to pay for it. Yet the folks at the Hurley Community Development Corporation, Hurley Fire Protection District and its auxiliary decided it was worth doing — and doing again. When attendees arrived, a fire department representative was at the gate accepting donations for next year’s show.
Long before the fireworks began, kids ran and played. Folks sat outside their vehicles — I’m not sure of an exact number, but it was a lot — and talked. It was so important to the community that the local cafe closed early so its employees could attend, too.
Locals could’ve said, “Let’s not bother.” But they didn’t.
Let’s take the time to “bother” with the things that are important in our communities.
