TODAY! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

We the Readers
Downtown Huntsville Library - 1:00 pm

Celebrate the 250th anniversary of The Declaration of Independence this year at the Downtown Huntsville Public Library with a search for The Great American Novel.

This month we are reading Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko, published 1977.

Nearly fifty years since its original publication, Ceremony remains one of the most profound and moving works of Native American literature, a novel that is itself a ceremony of healing. Tayo, a World War II veteran of mixed ancestry, returns to the Laguna Pueblo Reservation. He is deeply scarred by his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese and further wounded by the rejection he encounters from his people. Only by immersing himself in the Indian past can he begin to regain the peace that was taken from him. Masterfully written, filled with the somber majesty of Pueblo myth, Ceremony is a work of enduring power.

Today the first banner honoring our Revolutionary Patriots and the 250th anniversary of our country was raised in downtown Huntsville. 36 of these banners will be installed around the city.
Special thanks to the five Madison County DAR chapters for coming together to make these banners possible. Each chapter applied for an America 250 grant from the state of Alabama and the funds from those grants were used to purchase these banners.
A big shout out to the city of Huntsville, Madison County DAR chapters and all the individuals who helped make this possible.
