As we approach Giving Tuesday and the end of First Generation Celebration month, we are excited to spotlight one of our incredible scholarship donors.

Irma Tuder, founder of Analytical Services, Inc., talks about why she and her husband choose to give to UAH. Her fund, the Loya-Tuder Leadership Endowed Scholarship, benefits first-generation students and honors her parents’ commitment to education.

You can help support students on their educational journey, too. This Giving Tuesday, give the gift of opportunity by following the link in our bio or visiting uah.givingfuel.com/give.

On this First-Generation College Celebration Day, we honor the life and legacy of Jenny Phimavong Cooper (BS Information Systems ‘21), a proud UAH graduate whose journey continues to inspire.

Born and raised in Murfreesboro, TN, Jenny graduated from Riverdale High and later moved to Huntsville in 2016. She was the first in her family to attend and graduate college – earning her Information Systems degree from UAH during the COVID-19 pandemic before landing her dream job in cybersecurity at CrossFlow Technologies.

Sadly, she passed away in August 2022 at the age of 35.

Jenny brought wisdom, humor, and heart to everything she touched. She was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, and friend – a “bright spot” in the lives of everyone who knew her. Her wife Lauren, who established the Jenny Phimavong Cooper Memorial Scholarship, describes her as “a light” and a deeply proud first-gen student.

“She worked so hard to get there,” Lauren shared. “It was such a part of who she was.”

Now, through this scholarship, her legacy continues – supporting other first-gen Chargers who are forging their own path, just like she did.

If you would like to honor Jenny’s legacy and make a difference for other first-gen cybersecurity students like her, click the link in our bio. 💙

Meet Katie Greene (MS ‘22), the Associate Director for New Student Orientation at UAH.

With a BS in Hospitality Administration & Management from the University of Central Florida and an MS in Human Resources Management from UAH, Katie is a subject-matter expert in fostering belonging and integrating customer service principles into comprehensive orientation and employee programs.
As the facilitator of UAH’s two-day orientation event, Charger Camp, Katie brings passion and expertise to ensure that new students have a positive foundation for a transformative educational experience. They’re on a mission to create welcoming and supportive environments through camaraderie, inclusion and mutual aid.

Katie is also a member of the Blue GEMS Monthly Giving Society; they support UAH through a recurring monthly gift to the Student, Staff, and Faculty Emergency (SSAFE) Fund, which provides financial aid to members of the UAH community facing unexpected emergencies.

Could Katie be any cooler? Yes. You can find them around town skating with Rocket City Roller Derby, working with Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theatre, or hiking the many trails North Alabama has to offer.

Meet Frankie Pereze Reynosa (BS Nursing ‘26), a recipient of the Edith “Edie” Ivey Memorial Scholarship and the Margaret “Mac” Wright Scholarship for Nursing.

Frankie works hard to balance his responsibilities as a nursing student and a father. With budding interests in the birthing process and childhood development, Frankie is considering a career in pediatrics or labor and delivery – specializations in which he could best exercise his passion for patient care as a nurse or nurse practitioner. The UAH College of Nursing has given Frankie the opportunity to explore these professional possibilities, but he is even more grateful for the chance to connect with others in his nursing cohort.

Nursing is a difficult and demanding course of study, but Frankie has benefited greatly from the friendships he’s formed at UAH. “Nursing students are faced with many of the same challenges: a heavy workload, exams, and clinicals,” he says. “We help each other to succeed and remain focused, but also find the time to relieve stress and enjoy life as a group.” Frankie enjoys making connections with peers who are further along in nursing school, valuing their mentorship and tips for success. In return, he also makes an effort to connect and share his knowledge with the students that come after him. “Nursing is tough, and we need to stick together.”

In addition to the community he’s found at UAH, Frankie values a healthy work-life balance. He and his son enjoy walking in the park, trying new restaurants, and listening to different kinds of music. Scholarship support gives Frankie the flexibility and freedom to make room for these pastimes between clinicals, coursework, and his two-hour commute to campus. “My scholarship donors make my financial situation more manageable, and I am grateful to have them as a part of my journey,” he says. “Scholarship support allows me to help myself and my family, but also enables me to help others in the future through competent nursing care.”

Meet Mallie Hale, our Vice President for University Advancement and Executive Director of UAH Foundation.

Since 2016, Mallie has been overseeing the fundraising operations at UAH, guiding our Development and Advancement team and building meaningful relationships with our community and its supporters. During her time as a student at Birmingham-Southern College, Mallie had the opportunity to take an independent study course where she learned about the different areas and career opportunities within higher education. Her passion for getting to know people and their individual experiences drew her to student affairs and advancement, where she could witness the impact of higher education and the opportunities it creates for students from all walks of life.

Mallie and her team work diligently to serve as the engine for UAH’s continued success, and donor support is the key to this mission. She communicates regularly with several different university offices, colleges, programs, and people to identify what they need to achieve their goals; but Mallie’s favorite part of her job is getting to develop relationships with individuals and corporations who want to see their community thrive. It is thanks to the support of alumni, friends, longtime Huntsvillians, and dedicated members of our UAH family that we are able to provide the resources, tools, and experiences necessary for innovation and excellence.

“Higher education exists not only to benefit the community, but to benefit us personally,” says Mallie. “UAH - and the donors who make our endeavors possible - help students realize their aspirations and become skilled, well-informed citizens, all in service of creating a better and well-rounded workforce for the Huntsville community and beyond.”

In addition to supporting UAH with her time and service, Mallie also gives to the university’s Last-Mile Fund, which helps provide critical-gap funding for students who are facing unexpected circumstances towards the end of their degree program. “Everyone deserves the same opportunity to better themselves and their professional potential through higher education. Our community can only benefit from a more qualified and educated workforce. That’s what fuels innovation and allows us to improve the human condition.”

Mallie’s favorite thing about UAH is the people. “It’s wonderful to see students, faculty, staff, athletics supporters, community employers, Huntsvillians, and so many different kinds of people work together to create a remarkable institution that benefits our remarkable community.”

When she’s not busy improving our campus and empowering our community, Mallie enjoys spending time with her family and regularly runs six miles, six days a week - Charging Forward in life and in service.
