About Heritage Quilters of Huntsville

Our History

Heritage Quilters of Huntsville was formed on June 18, 1987. Our charter year began with 88 active members. Current charter members are listed in our Directory with an asterisk (*) next to their names. We are now over 300 members strong, and growing. The Guild has members who represent all skill levels of quilting from the beginner to the highly

skilled quilter. Our Purpose

As a not-for-profit organization, our purpose is to stimulate an interest in quilts, promote and advance the art of quilt making, conduct educational programs, and share skills with one another in the design and techniques of quilt making. Membership is open to anyone that enjoys quilting. Executive Board

Our guild is run by a Board that is made up of hard-working executive board and committee chair members. The names and phone numbers of the board members may be found in the newsletter and in the front of the Directory. These members work diligently to maintain and support a guild membership of approximately 300+ quilters. Meetings

We meet the third Thursday of every month in the Fellowship Building at Faith Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Whitesburg Drive and Airport Road (5003 Whitesburg Dr.), in Huntsville, AL. Everyone is encouraged to arrive about 6:30 PM and to use the time from 6:30 to 7:00 to visit any of the tables and talk to members about various activities and projects, socialize with others, sign up for workshops, etc. Our program starts at 7:00 PM.

Ready! Attention! Salute!

As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the USA, Heritage Quilters of Huntsville is honored to dedicate our June meeting to one of the most meaningful traditions in quilting: wrapping a veteran or service member in a quilt of gratitude, comfort, and appreciation.

Join us for a special Quilts of Valor presentation as the recipients of the our President’s QOV Block Quilts are honored. The evening’s program will be presented by our own April Goss, HQH’s First Vice President and the Chapter Coordinator of the Quilts of Valor guild, Liberty Piecemakers of Huntsville. April will share the history and mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, along with the remarkable work being done both nationally and right here in our local community. Since its founding in 2003, the organization has presented hundreds of thousands of quilts to service members and veterans touched by war, each quilt serving as a tangible expression of a grateful nation’s thanks.

This year’s presentation carries special significance as two veteran friends of Elaine receive what are, in essence, her President’s Quilt(s). Through every stitch, block, and seam, these quilts reflect not only the skill and generosity of our guild members, but also the relationships and shared love of quilting that connect us. Watching these quilts find their homes promises to be a moving and memorable experience.

Whether you have participated in Quilts of Valor projects for years or are simply curious to learn more, we invite you to join us for an evening of patriotism, gratitude, fellowship, and celebration. As quilters, we know that quilts tell stories. This month, we’ll honor stories of service, sacrifice, courage, and commitment—and we’ll have the privilege of wrapping those stories in warmth, comfort, and heartfelt thanks.

We hope you’ll be part of this extraordinary evening as we gather to celebrate our craft, our community, and the men and women who have served our nation.

HQH members are going to be dazzled this week!

MJ Kinman -- known for gems, color and creative brilliance -- will be the guest speaker at this Thursday's guild meeting!

An internationally recognized quilt artist, MJ transforms fabric into radiant, larger-than-life gemstones. She uses her signature technique -- freezer paper foundation piecing -- to create quilts that truly shine!

MJ's quilts have been exhibited at some of the most prestigious venues in the quilting world, including the National Quilt Museum and the International Quilt Museum. Most recently, her piece Torch Song earned the Cindy Friedman Master Award for Excellence at the 2024 Art Quilt Elements Biennial. She is also the author of Gemstone Quilts and Crack the Color Code.

Bold design, lush color, sparkling creations -- MJ will introduce guild members to her world of quilts at the HQH guild meeting. Come join HQH for a night of inspiration!

Get ready — Karen Martin (Birmingham, AL) is coming to our April guild meeting to introduce us to the magic of Quilt As You Go (QAYG)! If you’ve ever attempted to stuff a full-size quilt through your sewing machine and wondered why quilting suddenly felt like an Olympic sport, this technique may be the answer to your prayers. QAYG allows you to quilt in smaller, manageable sections as you go, eliminating the bulk, reducing strain, and making the entire process far more enjoyable.

Karen will walk us through the ins and outs of this clever method, sharing tips, tricks, and practical insights to help you achieve beautiful, professional-looking results—without the wrestling match. And as if that weren’t enough, she’ll also be bringing a trunk show of her own QAYG quilts, giving us a chance to see this technique in action across a variety of stunning pieces. Whether you’re a newer quilter looking for a more approachable finishing technique or a seasoned stitcher ready to try something new, this is a program that just might change the way you quilt forever. Come curious, leave inspired—and maybe even a little relieved! ✨

March guild meeting is all about fun, fabric and a little friendly risk-taking as we play Quilter’s Strip Poker! (No worries — the only thing changing hands will be fabric strips.)

To play, bring 2.5” x WOF strips in any color or print and get ready to roll the dice, trade fabrics and see what treasures you take home by the end of the evening. We’ll be playing in groups of eight, and luck (and maybe strategy!) will determine who walks away with the most coveted strips.

Plan to bring 2–3 dozen strips so you’ll have plenty for the ante and the action. Want to play but don't want to cut up fabric for the game? Again, no worries! There will be a limited number of strip packets for purchase at the meeting at 10 strips for $5. These will be available while supplies last.

Not feeling lucky? No problem! Bring your handwork, sit back, and enjoy the hijinks and hilarity as the games unfold. Whether you’re playing or just spectating, it promises to be a relaxed, laughter-filled night with your quilting friends — and possibly the start of your next scrappy masterpiece!
