The human brain is made up of many different cell types, each with its own role, and understanding how genes are regulated in these cells could help researchers uncover important clues about brain health and disease. 🧠🧬

Ashlyn Anderson, a PhD candidate in Nick Cochran’s lab at HudsonAlpha, is studying the genetic factors behind neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. By comparing gene regulation across nine mammalian species, her research is helping identify which regulatory elements are shared across species and which are unique to humans.

These findings offer new insight into the biology of the brain and could help guide future research into neurological diseases. 💙

Congrats to the Swaminathan Lab on securing a four year, $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE EPSCoR)! 🥳

Collaborating with Dr. Justin Kuang at Alabama A&M University, the team is digging deep into the genetics of Miscanthus, a fast growing grass with enormous potential as a sustainable crop for bioenergy and bioproducts.

Why is this work so important? 🌱⁉️Miscanthus has a system called “self incompatibility,” which prevents a plant from fertilizing itself. While great for genetic diversity in the wild, this trait makes it difficult for plant breeders to cross specific lines and develop predictable, high yield crops.

Using pan genomic and multiomics tools, the research team will study the cellular signals between pollen and stigma that trigger or block fertilization. By identifying and testing the key genes responsible, they hope to unlock new strategies for more efficient plant breeding. 🍃🔬

Big news for Alzheimer’s research right here in Alabama! Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donor community, HudsonAlpha is now home to a Quanterix Simoa HD-X Analyzer.

Why is this so important? This state-of-the-art technology removes major barriers to scientific participation.

Instead of families having to travel long distances to take part in clinical research, participants will be able to contribute right from their own homes using simple finger-prick blood mailer kits. 🩸✨

By bringing research into people’s homes and communities across the state, this equipment will help our team better understand how Alzheimer’s develops, years before symptoms even appear.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the patients and families impacted by breast cancer and highlight the research working to improve how we understand and detect the disease. 💗🧬

Graduate student Lana E. in the Sara Cooper Lab is studying rare genetic variants that may increase a person’s risk of developing breast cancer. For many patients with a personal or family history of breast cancer, genetic sequencing does not provide a clear molecular diagnosis. Lana’s research is helping researchers better understand these variants and what they could mean for patients.

By identifying and studying these genetic changes, the team hopes to improve early risk detection and give patients and their healthcare providers more information to guide appropriate screenings and care.

The conference brought together research parks and innovation communities from across the country, giving our team the opportunity to learn from peers, share ideas, and explore new ways to continue driving economic growth and innovation across our region and the state of Alabama.

We've already enrolled over 120 members of our community for the study, but we're looking for a few more participants to get us to our goal of 200 Parkinson's participants! You may be eligible to participate if: You're 19 years or older and have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, You're 19 years or older and live with or are related to someone with Parkinson's disease. Join us in welcoming Dr. Avinash Sreedasyam as a Research Faculty Investigator at HudsonAlpha! 🧬💙

Dr. Sreedasyam’s work focuses on understanding how plant genes function and respond to different conditions, using large scale genomic and transcriptomic data to uncover patterns that can be difficult to see in individual plant species. 🌱🔬

His research has contributed to the JGI Plant Gene Atlas, a resource spanning 18 plant species and more than 2,000 RNA sequencing libraries. By comparing gene expression across tissues, conditions, and species, this work is helping researchers better understand plant biology and identify genes that could become targets for future functional genomics and crop improvement research.

We’re excited to celebrate Dr. Sreedasyam as he takes on this new role and look forward to the discoveries ahead! 👏🌱
