What if the next generation of everyday materials could grow in a field? 🌱🔬

From the cup you carry to the car you drive, petroleum based materials are everywhere. But researchers are exploring a different starting point: perennial grasses like switchgrass and Miscanthus that can grow on underutilized farmland and provide renewable building blocks for products we use every day.

Through genomics and the BRIDGES Engine, HudsonAlpha and its partners are connecting plant science with agriculture and manufacturing to explore what’s possible when we grow the raw materials of tomorrow right here in our region.

We got a behind the scenes look at the Cooper Lab’s new space with PhD graduate student Lana Egorova! 🧬🔬

She gave us a tour of the newly relocated lab and a glimpse into the research happening behind the scenes as they work to better understand genetic variants that could improve hereditary breast cancer risk assessment.

During the 2025–2026 school year, HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach connected with an incredible 1.1M+ learners through programs, classrooms, community events, clinical interactions, and digital experiences. 🧬💙

That impact includes:

➡️ 95,775 K–12 students
➡️ 2,851 educators
➡️ 574 college and graduate students
➡️ 3,048 community members
➡️ 705 clinical interactions
➡️ 1,031,519 digital interactions

And the impact is easy to see. The jar pictured holds one bead for every learner reached this year.

After years of research, careful breeding, and countless hours in the field, it all comes down to a single yellow envelope filled with 250 seeds. 🥜🌱

For Dustin Herring, Agricultural Project Manager at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Wiregrass, getting those seeds safely from one place to the next is a critical part of the Wiregrass Peanut Project. Once they arrive at the research station in Headland and are planted, seeing those first seedlings emerge makes all the hard work worth it.

Last week, students from Glendale Community College (Glendale, AZ) stopped by HudsonAlpha during their trip to Huntsville! They are part of NASA’s MOSAICS program (Mentorship and Opportunities in STEM with Academic Institutions for Community Success), which empowers students through hands-on research and mentorship in STEM. 🚀🎓

It was an honor to tour the building with them, share our work in genomics and biotechnology, and showcase how science thrives right here in Huntsville.

Wishing these impressive students all the best as they continue their scientific journeys! 💙
