Kiera "Panda" Willis grew up facing challenges that made a career in science feel out of reach. As a nontraditional student balancing motherhood, work, and college courses, she was searching for a path forward when she discovered HudsonAlpha's Biotech Launch program.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Biotech Launch helps community college and nontraditional students gain hands on laboratory experience, professional development skills, and industry connections that prepare them for careers in biotechnology.

For Kiera, the program became more than a class. It became a turning point. Through mentorship, hands on learning, and new opportunities, she found confidence, belonging, and a future in science.

Today, her story is one of many demonstrating how access to education, training, and mentorship can help build the next generation of scientists right here in Alabama.

From Huntsville to the Wiregrass, HudsonAlpha scientists are growing a better peanut! 🌱

Our teams are studying peanut DNA to uncover solutions to drought, pests, and shifting weather patterns. This work helps farmers thrive and supports a more resilient food supply for communities around the world.

Today, peanut plants are growing in both our Huntsville greenhouse and the greenhouse at the Wiregrass Innovation Center in Dothan. While the goal is the same, advancing peanut research, the view from each greenhouse is a little different. 🥜💙
