Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pe*****tes even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

This is a difficult concept for the nonbeliever to comprehend but none the less true. It is not at all surprising as 1 Corinthians 2:14 tells us “the person without the Spirit (Holy Spirit) does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” John 1:1 tells us “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Later in verse 14, John further clarifies what is written in verse 1 when he says “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” So this verse in Hebrews is giving us the incredible strength that exists by having the word of God alive and active. The “Word” that John wrote about was Jesus Christ and while there are specific verses that use the many names for Jesus Christ, every verse ultimately has to do with the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the living Word of God and as such, makes the Bible different from any other written record. It is a living, breathing document that serves us just as well today as it did at the time it was written and it will continue to serve us well until the end of days.

With Jesus being the living Word of God, believers must compare everything that He is to everything that we are. Not only at the surface level but to the very core of who we are in Him. Since the fall of man, the Word of truth has searched out everything within us that is not of Christ. Our self-centeredness, self-serving, self-pleasing, hypocritical, arrogant, unbelieving ways are all exposed by the Word of God. Our verse says it is shaper than any two-edged sword, “it pe*****tes to dividing soul from spirit, joint and marrow.” It can be compared to the double-edged sword that is extremely sharp on each side. It is so razor sharp that it can divide what is spirit from self. It is capable of dividing what is thoughts, actions, and deeds that are focused on Jesus from the thoughts, actions, and deeds focused on self. The Word of God has the incredible ability to pe*****te so deeply that it can divide the worldly man from the born again spirit.

It closes with the statement “it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” God’s ultimate desire is to transform us into being more and more Christ-like. The living Word of God gives us everything we need to properly train ourselves to have the right thoughts and the right attitude of the heart. Please understand that this not a short or easy process because while we are trying to conform our lives to be more like Christ, we continue to live in a world filled with sin and temptation. Never forget that our God is greater than he that is in the world so it is possible to shut out the world if we rely upon the Lord to guide us. That is why this is a life-long process and it never ceases. That is why the Word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword because it is constantly carving away the things of the world making room for right thoughts and a right attitude of the heart. The word of God is alive and active and this is what is used by the Holy Spirit to bring about change and urge us to grow closer in our walk with Christ. Our God does not do this for the purposes of pleasure but for the purpose of teaching us to have an eternal focus rather than an earthly (sinful) focus. Philippians 1:6 tells us “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Hallelujah that the Word of God is alive and active and it is leading us to be the believer God has intended us to be, serving Him and continually working to get the world out of us and the Word in us! Psalm 91:11 “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

There is great confusion, as much in the church as there is in the world, regarding angels. God created angels as spiritual beings to serve Him. While I do not write this to confuse anyone or hurt anyone’s feelings, God has instructed me to write truth so I must obey as He has directed regardless of the consequences. Humans do not become angels when they physically die. We were created for an entirely different purpose and angels sole purpose is to serve God at His beckoning call both in heaven and on earth. In fact this verse is telling us that God uses these spiritual beings to minister to His children and stand guard around God’s people to preserve them for the purpose God created them to serve. Satan even used this as a means to tempt Jesus Christ when He was in His human form. Matthew 4:6 tells us “If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Satan was urging Jesus to challenge a promise given by God. Jesus gives us a great example of making application of God’s truth without having to take some foolish action just to see if it is indeed true. While as believers we know that angels have been placed all around us, it is not necessary that we do something just to see if it is true. By faith we know that God commands the spiritual beings known as angels and they will absolutely carry out His commands to the letter.

The latter part of the verse states “in all your ways.” The psalmist is telling us as we go from place to place following the directions given by our Heavenly Father.guidance and direction. This applies to every aspect of our lives whether it is personal, work, or spiritual. The way in which Satan used it with Christ does not fit any of these described ways, it was not used for the purposes scripture describes. Therefore, if we try to use things of God in ways that were not intended then we should not expect the results to be as God has promised. Satan tried to tempt Jesus with something that is of God but used in a way that is not of God. Jesus was well aware that there are angels and He knew His Father would use them as He had promised but Satan’s temptation was outside the parameters of the time and place God chooses to use these spiritual beings known as angels. Today take a moment to give thanks to our Heavenly Father for these spiritual beings known as angels and the service they provide as directed by the Lord. AMEN AND AMEN

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

The words “be strong and courageous” were not new to Joshua. Joshua had already demonstrated his lack of fear by his actions in the war against the Amalek and his refusal to be persuaded by the evil spies. Yet God wants to remind him again. In this case Joshua is being told to stand firm on what he has been taught and he was not to be persuaded by others to change his path from the one God had established for him. Joshua was a humble man and struggled with his self-worth, while he never questioned the power and authority of God. Let’s face it, following Moses was a pretty tough act to follow! Yet God saw great things in Joshua and as a result selected him to lead the captives into the Promise Land.

God is demonstrating through Joshua what He expects of you and me. His question in the beginning of our verse “Have I not commanded you?” doesn’t just apply to Joshua but to all who profess to be Followers of Jesus Christ. God is making a bold statement and He is telling us He is all-sufficient regardless of the circumstances. God wants us to know that we shouldn’t be afraid or discouraged based on what we believe are our weaknesses or inadequacies because the Lord is with us wherever we go. God is telling us if He commands it to be done, it will be done regardless of what may appear to be obstacles. IT WILL BE DONE! “Have I not commanded you?” God is telling us if He commanded it to be done He will empower us, He will help us, He will give us boldness, provide for us, and reward us when we complete His assignment. Our hearts desire must be to fulfill the will of God and in the process of fulfilling those commands we have nothing to fear nor be discouraged because the Lord our God will be with us wherever we go. Matthew 19:14 “ Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

It was a Jewish custom to bring children to important people to have them bless the children and this was most frequently accomplished by the important person praying and laying on of hands. There was an occasion where people were bringing children to see Jesus and the disciples were scolding their parents and telling them to leave. Jesus quickly sets things straight for all to see and hear when He tells the disciples “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them.” Jesus loved children and viewed them as a blessing from the Lord. As a result, He considered it an important responsibility for Him to lay His hands on them and pray over them. Jesus clearly understood that children were born with a sinful nature and He wanted all children to grow up to know Him as their Personal Savior.
Matthew 18:2-6 tells us “He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. ‘If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Jesus makes it very clear that anyone that causes one of these little ones to fall will pay a great penalty for their actions. Let’s be clear, there is a literal meaning to this scripture, an actual child being led astray, and there is the figurative meaning, someone who is a newly born believer, and must grow spiritually to mature in their relationship with the Lord. In either case, it is critical that we raise up children/new believers to grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Outside of the joy that comes from a parents own salvation, the next greatest joy is leading your child to salvation. Regardless of whether you have children of your own or not, you have a responsibility as a believer to influence those around you to know what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. For those of us that desire to truly serve the Lord, we may, at times, serve as spiritual parents for those who are lost and do not know the way to salvation. If we model ourselves after Jesus Christ and the importance He placed on little children we can have a huge impact on adding to the Kingdom of God. AMEN AND AMEN

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

He creates all things but He continues to have the same power and authority throughout what we define as time. Mankind has taken many liberties with the issue of how the earth came into existence. It is probably one of the most widely debated topics throughout the generations yet each theory has flaws and unanswered questions except one. Genesis 1:1 gives us a very straightforward summary of what is then described in detail in the rest of chapter one. David Jeremiah states “This one statement speaks to time and space (in the beginning) as well as matter (the heavens and the earth) being established out of nothing.” And it is God that takes time and space combined with matter and uses them to put together His preordained creation. Essentially this verse identifies that God has always been and will always be which is supported throughout scripture.

The Hebrew word for “created” is only associated with God in scripture and refers to things that only God can do. It is also interpreted to mean things that are of such magnitude and wonder because they came from nothing. Revelations 4:11 tells us “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” So how is it that a verse in the opening chapter of the Bible can be so aligned with a verse in the last chapter of the Bible, because everything in between agrees with what these two verses present.

Here is the key and critical question, do you believe what Genesis 1:1 states? Without accepting that God existed before anything else and that by His power and authority He created all things, then the Bible really cannot have meaning for you. You see it is part and parcel to everything else in scripture and without acceptance of God being who He is and accepting what He can do then it is virtually impossible to believe anything else in His word. The events in scripture are all undergirded with the foundation of God’s existence before anything else and His ability to take time and space and combine it with matter to put together His creation, not only then but right now. In the beginning God created, if you cannot accept and put your trust and faith in that one statement then you will most certainly struggle with what comes after it. I pray Heavenly Father that anyone reading this and struggles with our verse today that the Holy Spirit will remove the scales from their spiritual eyes and allow them to see the awesome and powerful God you are. May they use Genesis 1:1 to give them comfort and understanding that there is a purpose and a plan for everything You have done and You will do. AMEN AND AMEN

Matthew 11:28 “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Believers don’t get a pass when it comes to feeling weary and weighted down. This verse from Matthew is one of the most comforting verses in all of the gospels. Yet we seem to want to make it so hard to do! In reality, it takes childlike faith to receive this rest that Jesus offers. In verse 25 Jesus prays “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.”

The rest Jesus offers removes the burdens brought on by the extremely religious people and their practices. We find even in some of today’s religions added rules and regulations that are not only unnecessary but they are not at all scriptural. Jesus is telling us that we should put down the heavy burdens that are manmade and enjoy the rest He offers in our relationship with Him. This offer is open to anyone that is willing to receive it.

When Jesus refers to “burdens” He is talking about His expectations. He has provided teaching that included commandments but differing greatly from those created by religious leaders. 1 John 5:3 tells us “Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.” One of the key benefits of Jesus’ rest is it teaches us we do not have to work our way to heaven. We break free from the slavery of sin by placing all of our hope in Jesus death on the cross and His resurrection. Remember, the way of Christ is so different from religious leaders that try to burden us with heavy loads and expectations that are virtually impossible to achieve. God’s desire is for us to pass along the message of His grace and mercy, and to avoid loading people down with religious traditions and rituals! Remove those heavy burdens and let Jesus give you rest. AMEN AND AMEN

Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”

Probably one of the most foolish things we can do is try to hide our sin from God! 1 John 3:20 teaches us “If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.” The very idea that we are smart enough to find a way to cover things up so that God will not know what we have done is ridiculous. Especially when we read verses like Hebrews 4:13 which says “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Solomon, the author of Proverbs, is emphasizing the importance of honesty, integrity, and repentance in every aspect of our lives.

It is very important that we understand that if we do not acknowledge our sin, it is impossible to learn from it. After all, what good can come from a mistake if we do not learn from it? Concealing sin leads to guilt which then leads to spiritual decline. For the best outcome we must admit it, analyze it, and make the necessary changes to turn from it so we never make the same mistake again. Everyone makes mistakes, sins, but only the unwise repeat them.

Our verse tells us that for those that confess and renounce their sin (mistakes), they will be shown mercy. Mercy is defined as unmerited favor and God’s mercy is a gift. By confessing and renouncing our sins we receive forgiveness and it restores our relationship with the Lord. Other character themes related to this verse would be humility, redemption, and transformation. It is by the cleansing of our hearts that we experience the true peace of God and without confession we cannot receive God’s forgiveness! AMEN AND AMEN

Luke 6:28 “Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.”

While the word “curse” is often thought of as putting a magical spell on someone, in this case the word is used to describe hatred toward someone. To hurt someone with this hatred is to use destructive actions or words. Just prior to this, Jesus had preached sermons that stated for those that suffer for following Him there are promised blessings. He also makes it clear that it is not the responsibility of the believer to initiate judgment for these actions, deeds, or words. Romans 12:19 teaches us “Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back,’ says the Lord.”

As difficult as it may seem, Jesus actually tells us to love our enemies and we should pray blessings on them! We should ask the Lord for their redemption and that they will see the light of Christ and receive the gift of grace. While this may seem impossible, it can only be accomplished when we are putting all of our faith and trust in the Lord. Otherwise, we will allow their sin to cause us to return to our “old ways” and we will seek revenge and satisfaction of equal or greater proportion. Luke 6:36 tells us “You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.” We must surrender judgment to its rightful owner and that is God! We must allow God to determine the appropriate punishment for the hurt inflicted on us because of our relationship with Jesus. We must rely on the promises given to believers in Luke 6:22-23 which says “What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man. When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way.” These words let us know we are not alone in the hatred shown to believers and, as difficult as it sounds, we are to pray for and love those who hate us because of our faith and trust in the Lord. This can only be accomplished if we find our identity in the Lord and allow our heart to lead when determining our actions! AMEN AND AMEN

Ecclesiastes 3:11 “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

While many have tried, none have been able, if they are totally honest, to be completely satisfied with earthly pleasures or offerings. Every person has been created in the image of God and for this reason, even if we vehemently deny it, there is something within us that desires more. The Life Application Study Bible tells us “Because we are created in God’s image, (1) we have spiritual thirst, (2) we have eternal value, and (3) nothing but eternal God can truly satisfy us.”

The Hebrew word “olam” can be translated “eternity” which refers to God placing a desire and longing to understand eternity in every human heart. To begin to understand this, we have to look no further than how humans interact differently with creation. Our inner being has an instinctive knowledge that there is something more to life beyond what we can see, hear, taste, and touch.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 gives us a very good context to understand Ecclesiastes 3:11. It says “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” While scripture talks about these seasons, there is nothing in this earthly realm that can truly satisfy the human heart’s desire for a deeper, greater understanding of life and how to live it. Ecclesiastes 1:2 gives us the answer regarding earthly attempts to satisfy this longing when it says “Everything is meaningless,’ says the Teacher, ‘completely meaningless!” The world is vain and we must guard our hearts against vanity becoming our solution. James 4:14 says “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” When we think about life in its truest sense, it nothing more than a v***r and then it is gone. That is why we must seek to gain spiritual knowledge and wisdom to satisfy the heart’s desire to understand the meaning of life and what happens after life on earth. Every man and women innately knows that there is something beyond this earthly life and God has given each of us a divine awareness that our souls will live forever. That is why scripture states this world is not our home but simply a temporary stop prior to our eternal destination. AMEN AND AMEN

Ephesians 2;8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Paul is telling us that God’s grace is what saves us and this gift is often defined as “unmerited favor.” We are not required to accomplish certain tasks or provide certain services in order to receive this gift. Grace is the source of our salvation and we believe by faith to receive our salvation. Romans 10:9 teaches us “ If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Without God giving us this “unmerited favor” we would never choose on our own to believe. Salvation could never be obtained without the provision of grace!

Think about this example: If someone gave you a gift, would you respond with “how much do I owe you?” I would like to think all of us would say “absolutely not.” We should respond with a genuine “thank you” and be grateful for the gift. So how is it there are so many professing Christians that receive the free gift of salvation and yet feel like they have to “do stuff” to earn their way to God.

From the worlds perspective it is believed that God accepts good people and rejects bad people. It is often thought that there is some scale of goodness that God uses to determine who is in and who is out. In addition to the goodness scale there is the added component of certain religious performance. Yet Paul rejects these ideas and declares that it is by grace and grace alone that we receive our salvation. Then he takes it a step further and emphasizes the reason for this is so no one can boast about what they did to receive their salvation. After all, how good is good enough?

With this understanding, the critical question for us would be “on what am I basing my salvation?” Are you convinced that because you are a good person that is all you need. Are you counting on all the good things you have done in your life to outweigh all the not so good things you have done? My hope and prayer is that you recognize there is nothing that you can do to earn salvation and you readily and willingly accept God’s gift of grace by faith in Jesus Christ! This is the only way to have an eternal relationship with God! AMEN AND AMEN
